The brief quiet was nice. Now, this was not to say that George didn't like it when Lydia talked, quite the opposite. He enjoyed just listening to her talking about the things that were important to her. But quiet was nice, too. The whisper of the tires on the roadway, the sounds of the city outside their little steel and glass bubble.
He laughed at her question. "Well," he said thoughtfully, "bananas offer quite a range of creative things a person can do with their peels, but I suppose oranges have peels, too. Or maybe an artichoke spinning like a flapper with sequins on the leaves."
