"Blame it all on me, isn't that the way it's always been between us? You get caught doing something and, of course, it's my fault." Sirius balled up his fist once more, tempted to hit Remus again but it wasn't much fun to hit him when he wouldn't hit back.
"I wouldn't have taunted her! Fuck's sake, Remus, I would've offered myself up in their place!" Sirius raked a hand through his hair as he caught himself. His exasperated and angry tone switched to one of resignation. "I've told you for years, there's only two ways of dealing with my family. One is to be angry all the time at them, taunt them into being stupid. And the other is to pretend to give them what they want. Act like you're going along with it and you can beat them at their own game. Now's not the time to piss her off, not with Dora and Andromeda being held like this. Now's the time to beat them at their own game."
He hated his family, he really did. Thank the maker that they no longer acknowledged one another. He hated everything about them, the way they thought, the way they acted, the way they viewed the world. But he also knew all of it and, for Dora and Andromeda, he'd be willing to think like them, risk everything to get in there and take their place. "There's more at play right now, more at stake. It's not just Dora and Andromeda she's after. Who's the one person she's always wanted to get her hands on?"
