Making a gesture to a passing employee who was making his way to the back of the building he told her, "I don't know him either, but I trusted him to make my lunch. I think I'm taking a lesser risk with you, miss." His words were honest without being harsh or rude. It was just how his mind worked. While people took it for granted, they lived in a world of 'trust'. You trusted the cook would cook your meal. You trusted the waitress wasn't going to stiff you for a hearty tip. And he couldn't help but trust the look on her face when she found herself without a dime on her. It could be an act, a lot of women had been making acting a part of their routine lives. Even in being a man of the past, he wasn't completely dumb to the facts. He didn't understand women and why they said and did they things they did, but he wasn't blind to their feminine wiles. Even still, his gut told him she wasn't acting, but was in a genuine predicament. His gut was rarely wrong.
"It took me a little while to get on my feet around here too. It would have been nice if someone threw a twenty my way to make it a little easier," he explained further, to show he had his reasons for wanting to help. He was the new kid and had problems finding his feet himself when he landed here. The more he stayed, the more he realized there were others here just like him and he couldn't just turn his back knowing what it was like being them. He fortunately had Lois from the start. For all he knew, this woman had no one to scrape change together with in hopes of a meal and a place to stay.
He wondered if his explanation was enough. It looked like that suspicious look of hers might not just be vacationing on her face. She might be the type that didn't trust anyone. Everyone had their reasons for being the way they were. Just like he had his reasons for being a genuinely nice guy. He liked the feeling it gave him to know he did something good for someone. Honestly he didn't want anything in return-- he didn't even expect her to pay him back. Steve just wanted to make the world a better place. Even if it was just by giving away one twenty at a time. Problem would be convincing her of that. He never thought he'd have to try to convince someone to keep his money. This had to be a first.
