"It wasn't about being the best-" It was. "It had just been too long! Everyone agreed. It would have been stupid to try." Her mother hadn't said so. Her father had remained quietly neutral on the subject, like always, never offering an opinion until it really mattered. When it had come down to it, he had simply asked Kitty if she thought she could do it to the best of her ability. She had said no.
Kitty wanted to cover her ears, shout over his words, anything really to not hear what Seth was saying as he continued to detail exactly how her not-even relationship with Sean was doomed to fail. It had happened before, once, but she had only been fifteen, it was a perfectly valid reason. Second guessing herself more than ever, Kitty frowned and took a small step forward (intended to be much more firm than it had actually turned out).
"Stop it! That's not what it's like at all!" Was it? "Sean- We're not even-" God, she could barely collect her thoughts as fast as she was spitting out anything to get him to just stop talking.
"It's not going to happen like that." she finally added, somewhat weakly. "You're wrong."
