The military squad finished their sweep through the gigantic Lexcorp building cultivating, as it always did, on the top floor of the structure. No one in Red Oaks knew who or what Lexcorp was but whoever had inhabited the top office had expensive tastes, that was for sure.
One of the soldiers lingered near the ornate and fully stocked glass liquor cabinet and admired the heavy crystal glasses and exotic boozes that were on display inside before glancing around. Unfortunately, as he always was, his superior officer was watching him like a hawk.
No one knew where the city came from, no one knew where the original inhabitants had gone, or if they were ever going to suddenly appear and want to take back their property but the government had strict orders to touch nothing until satisfied this wasn't some kind of trap or potential legal entanglement. Some believed the shining bright city might stand empty and vacant forever while the government wasted endless time debating.
As the unknown soldier glanced around once more at the lit office, which was another thing that didn't make sense to the man, here was a city with a power source that was still active. buildings were lit, apartments had working elevators, heat and air was working keeping the empty places perfectly comfortable and even that the military was not allowed to interfere with. If a light was on in a building when they entered, they had to leave them shining. Strictly look but do not touch policy!
With a final shrug at the mentality of the government and the military in general the soldier stepped out of the office, followed by his commanding officer.
The large ornate oak doors of the room closed and several long moments passed, distantly the sounds of soldier's boots clanking down the stairs could be heard, as the men were not even allowed to use the elevators in case they might be a trap.
Finaly a full length portrait of a bald man posing with one hand resting on his chest in a Napoleon like manner highlighting an interesting ring on one finger on one of the walls slid to the side and the Master strolled out of a hidden room and walked over to the liquor cabinet that so fascinated the soldier a few moments ago. Unlike the earlier soldier, the Master didn't hesitate and slid the glass door open and picking up a glass poured himself a drink from one of the bottles inside.
Raising the glass, the Master toasted the empty chair behind the massive oak desk in the room. "I don't know who you were, but you have excellent tastes that mirror my own." He told the empty chair.
The Master after his brief moonlit talk with the Doctor a few nights ago had decided to check out the city that had caught both their interests. The Master had, up to that point been staying in barns, abandoned houses anything to stay below the radar as he tried to figure out how he had ended up here and frankly that was so not his style. So once he entered the city, sneaking past the woefully unobservant military patrols, he went straight to the largest and grandest building in the city and instantly decided to 'set up shop' there.
The top office was perfect. It took the Master no time at all to find the hidden rooms by scanning using the laser screwdriver the Doctor had so thoughtfully returned to him.
With the hidden room just off the office with its secret monitor cameras, it was child's play to avoid the rigidly scheduled patrol sweeps and the Master was once again living the good life in what had obviously been a seat of power to someone.
The Master reclined in the comfy leather chair behind the desk and placed his feet up on its oak surface. He still hadn't quite made up his mind on what he was going to do, but nothing said he couldn't relax in style while he decided.
