Charles was a bit startled by the Doctor's instant recognition of his holding back, but he put that down to the fact that it was rare for anyone to be as openly perceptive as he was--also, he thought ruefully, apparently most of the people he knew well could read him like an open book, despite his beliefs to the contrary.
"All right," Charles said, and he did visibly relax, letting his arms swing freely as he walked behind the Doctor and drank in the architecture all around them. It was quite stunning, in its way, and he couldn't really think of anywhere he'd been that was quite like it.
"I think by and large humanity is quite concerned with appearances. It's important for us to keep up certain roles to fit in." Charles thought instantly of Raven, and then of their recent conversation about her desire to be accepted for herself. "Although it often has less than stellar consequences."
