"Hello, Rose," he said softly, taking her hand and giving it a gentle shake. However much he really wanted to tug her into his arms and hug her for all he was worth. His hearts clenched in his chest. This girl meant so much to him, as a friend, and that look of blank nonrecognition hurt so much. He hadn't expected it to hurt that much. He'd become used to having all that pain locked away as deep as he could manage.
