Time was a funny thing, especially when you thought you had all of it at your fingertips. The Doctor had been quite content to simply, well, run, from the Ood's prophecy about his death. The whole thing, specifically the thought of dying and not regenerating, was enough to keep him moving at top speed as often as possible. It'd been a great ride too, well, at least parts of it, well, okay, maybe great had been a bit of an exaggeration, but parts of it had been absolutely brilliant. He'd gotten to meet the first colonists on Mars -- even if he opted not to think of how that trip had ended, and had even done battle with one very large, Victorian, Cyber..woman? It was just another few notches to add to his extensive list of accomplishments. He'd been quite content to jet off somewhere new and had done just that. There wasn't even a need to set coordinates. He'd just randomly turn dials and let the wonderful TARDIS do her thing. Of course that whole idea came crashing down when he heard the distinctive sound of the cloister bell.
It resonated throughout the ship, reaching every tiny nook and cranny. "What?!" He spoke out loud in a sharply raised tone, his eyes wide with surprise. That sound was never, ever, good. "One." He began counting out the tones. "Two..." His voice hitched slightly as he felt a knot building somewhere in his throat. "Three...oh-no-no-no-NO!" The Doctor began to scramble around the TARDIS jerking any lever he could and even pressing several buttons with the heel of his foot. "Not today. Please-please-please not today. I've been so good to you -- well, sure, you were dropped into the Zed Neutrino core back in the Crucible -- but that wasn't my fault! C'mon so many new..." The Doctors words fell silent as the fourth tone struck, and he froze in his tracks. "Four." He swallowed as an eerie silence descended into the room. "...Four Times...why'd it have to be -- "
The Doctor's expressions shifted suddenly. No longer was it the face of panic and the idea he was about to confront his death, but rather that of absolute confusion. "Hold on." He spoke to the TARDIS, setting his foot back down on the floor. "We've stopped moving -- you've stopped moving -- why have you stopped moving? I didn't tell you to stop moving -- where are we?" The Doctor jerked the pannel over in front of him, trying to get a reading. Unfortunately the symbols, which were normally as simple to read as a short string of numbers, seemed just as confused as he himself. "What's the matter with you?" He glanced at the TARDIS' main spire. "Don't tell me your sick -- oh please-please-please don't be sick-not now...Hold on.." His voice trailed again. "He will knock four times.." He repeated the opening line. "Since when are you a he?"
The Doctor grabbed his long coat off the bench nearby and threw it over his shoulders. He'd opted for the blue suit and red sneakers -- frankly he just thought it looked better. Once his outfit had been pieced together, he double checked. "Sonic Screwdriver, psychic paper, TARDIS locking key, a pair of viewing glasses, brainy spectacles, and -- just in case -- a good pair of running shoes. Right then! Let's see where we are!" He reached for the door handles of the TARDIS and jerked it open. His face soured all at once and he turned his gaze back over his shoulder. "You know, you're not very funny."
With his final quip behind him, The Doctor stepped out the door and locked the TARDIS. "Now." He pulled in a breath of fresh air, almost as if tasting it to try and figure out where, and when, he was. "Nitrogen and Oxygen based atmosphere, moderate humidity -- Oo." He puckered his lips slightly. "...and just a dash of Argon. Tastes like -- no, couldn't be, is it?" He Doctor whirled around on his feet. If this was Earth, then where was it? The TARDIS didn't seem to like it, seemed all kinds of sick for a reason he just couldn't fathom. It was almost like two parts of space, two parts that should never, ever, touch, were close together -- but there was no sign of it at all.
There was just an old, quiet, cemetery with one, eccentric, man in a long brown coat, standing next to a police box...with a very curious -- and quite large -- smile on his face.
