Number One shook her head. "I wish," she said wryly. The idea of some form of intergalactic law enforcement was something that would be relished by someone in her position. Unfortunately, it was also laughably hopeless. If such a force existed, they might have stopped the invasion and subsequent destruction of Lorien in the first place. The Mogadorians arrested or wiped out in turn would mean they would have never made it to Earth. "But no, no space cops. Not in my world anyway. I'm still getting used to my new life here."
Sensing that there was more to that story, One nodded, curious but not wanting to press. And if introductions were being made, it would be only polite to respond in kind. "We came to Earth so young, I remember nothing of my previous life on my home planet so we are just called by our respective numbers and as I said, I'm One. The alias I was going by right before I got here was Evangeline Abernethy from Virginia. That's what I've been telling people I've met here, too. So for all intents and purposes, my name is Evie. It's nice to meet you, Buffy."
She admired the other young woman's fighting philosophy. All of the Garde were trained from childhood to be warriors, but not all of them enjoyed the role. Although she did not shirk from the task she was responsible for, One was among the ones that just wanted to live like a normal girl. As she told Buffy mere moments ago, she did not want to live the rest of her life this way. She hoped that one day, sooner rather than later, the war would be over.
