The phone had cut off right in the middle of his conversation with one of his legitimate business interests and he could not get a signal back on his phone. As such he was already very annoyed when he felt the limousine slow and coast to a stop. He waited impatiently for a few seconds for his driver to inform him as to what was going on, but no explanation came. Lex stabbed at the button that controlled the sliding partition between the back and front of the vehicle and did not wait for it to be halfway down before he barked out his displeasure.
"Carl! What in the hell is going on up there?!" there was no answer and the partition, finishing its descent, clicked into place. "Carl! --Carl?''
Lex couldn't see the other man's face in the rear-view mirror as he usually could, so he leaned forward and moved himself the length of the space from the back to the front of the passenger area. His suspicions were confirmed as he gazed through the open partition. Carl was, in fact, nowhere to be seen. Moving backward to the door, he opened it and stepped out onto the blacktopped pavement of the --completely empty Metropolis street. Lex blinked as he turned in slow circles, taking in the surroundings. It was definitely Metropolis and it was like a ghost town. Nothing but he and his now empty limousine sat in the usually bustling street.
Lex began to run thoughts, possibilities and scenarios through his mind. What had happened here? Where was everyone? How could something like this happen and how could he undo it? He'd not gotten very far in his thoughts when he heard a very distinct sound moving in the distance, still out of his sight, and coming toward him rapidly. It was the sound of the stromping double-stepping of military boots. Reacting on instinct and without thought Lex reached down to his watch and pressed the secret button hidden on its side. Then he stood there waiting.
It didn't take long before the sound gave way to actual boots. Boots which were attached to military personnel taking the shape of a small platoon that came into view around the two corners in front of the limo. Lex crossed his arms over his chest as they took up flanking positions around him. This was all so completely unnecessary. What were they even doing in his city anyway?
"This is a restricted area. You have entered a quarantine zone. Step away from the vehicle with your hands visible and lay face-down on the ground." one of the soldiers spoke through a bullhorn.
Lex snorted, half laugh half annoyance. "I'm sorry to disappoint you gentlemen, but Lex Luthor doesn't answer to whatever military you are a part of. Also, this is a ten thousand dollar suit and I will not be putting it anywhere even remotely near the pavement. Besides, it's you who are intruding on my city. Meaning that you are the one's who should be leaving."
"This is your last warning. Step away from the vehicle and lie down on the ground or we will open fire!" Every man raised his weapon as if to punctuate their commanding officer's statement.
Lesser men would have been within a hairs breath of soiling their ten thousand dollar suit at that moment. Lex Luthor was not a lesser man. Add that to the fact that he could see what he'd actually been waiting for come into view just behind the soldiers, and you had the face of a man who was smugly confident in his actions.
"Once again, I will have to decline your offer, as it seems that my ride has arrived," he said as he uncrossed his arms.
The gesture seemed to be all it took to trigger the hail of gunfire that followed. Lex simply shook his head and grinned as the bullets bounced off the metal hides of the large green and purple robot sentries that had landed to form a shield around him. As his robots returned fire, sending the soldiers to duck and cover, Lex calmly slid back into his limousine with an order to be taken to LexCorp Tower and closed the door.
Moments later he felt the slight jerk as the vehicle was lifted into the air and whizzed away.
~~~~~~~~~~~
A short time later, after the sentries had landed him safely on the tower's roof-top helipad, Lex once again slid out of the limo. He gave a series of orders to the dozen robots, all of which regarded keeping watch over and guarding the tower, before moving off to his private elevator.
Having only one destination from the roof, button pushing wasn't necessary as the elevator doors closed. It took only moments for the car to descend, the secret panel on the wall of his office to whoosh away, the elevator doors to open and for Lex Luthor to step out and onto the very expensive carpet of his office floor.
