She wanted to sleep but the truth was she couldn’t. She was exhausted but she was wide awake at the same time. While resting was probably the smartest thing to do her mind didn’t allow it. She was too on edge to close her eyes since there was always that possibility that when she opened them she would be elsewhere, probably somewhere even farther away from New York. “I’m okay,” she lied, pressing her back against the seat as she stared ahead. “Have you ever felt so exhausted that you can’t even sleep? Your body just feels dead and you know you should sleep but you just can’t? That’s how I feel right now. It’s probably nerves and well, all of this.”
It was still something she could barely understand. She didn’t know how someone was supposed to just be in one place and then somewhere else the next. The change of scenery was instantaneous with no kind of warning whatsoever. If Niki was dragged into a different place what did it mean for Micah and D.L.? Where were they right now while Niki was here in Red Oak? Trying to understand it was migraine inducing, a spontaneous pain that only told Niki that there was no good in thinking about it.
