After Tristan had showed him around Wednesday, Bailey had managed to convince himself to go back to their cabin and tough it out through the night. Though he felt sure he could joke it off, he'd been too embarrassed in the end to ask Tristan to clear out his room and had invented new and more colorful swears as the night progressed while he used his pillow case to pick up the reptiles and chuck them out the window. Thursday had proven too much, however. Even with his room clear, they kept finding ways in. Even when there weren't lizards actually in the room, he imagined he could hear snakes in the walls and started to seriously contemplate the possibility that there was some sort of hole to hell under his bed that might be producing reptiles no matter how many shirts he stuffed in the crack under the door.
In the end Bailey had shouted through the door in case Tris was still around that he was going to the Keep, then popped his window open and shimmied through to make his escape.
That was how he'd ended up curled up in an armchair all night, idly sketching fish and trying to work out the shading for fish scales before they reminded him too much of a reptile's skin and he called it a night.
Bailey blinked as morning hit, wondering for a second why his eyes weren't adjusting right. He'd probably strained them in the night while sketching, but he hadn't really found a need to look into finding better lighting until he didn't want to draw anymore anyway. Still blinking away sleep, he threw a hand out to grab the back of the chair and pull himself upright.
His hand landed on something lumpy.
It squirmed.
"Jesusfuckingchristgoddammit!"
Bailey hit the floor, scrambling backwards to put as much space as possible between him and the thing skittering away from him. Even just a panicked glance around revealed that the lizards were everywhere. He could feel his skin crawling just thinking about how fast they could get to him. Lizards were fast. If they wanted to, they could cover him in an instant. He was on the floor. An easy target. If he stayed where he was...
He ran for the kitchen before even realizing he'd gotten up. The first counter he got to, Bailey boosted himself up. His heart was beating too fast and he felt a little like he might be suffocating, but he still had the sketchbook in his hands somehow. If they tried to climb up after him, he would knock them back down. Even if the idea of touching them at all made Bailey actively feel like he would pass out.
There was no way in hell that this was worth the prize.
