Summary: Jake and April do what they've been saying they're going to do

They'd agreed it was best to at least try it this week because who knew what future weeks would bring. The temperature wasn't too cold for her or too warm for him, and they did agree that doing it sooner rather than later, with the way the week was progressing, would be the better way to go. Which was how they wound up where they were. April had seen the post Jake had made on the network (after Jaime had pointed it out) and she thought that was brave of him, all things considered. He'd mentioned the staring thing, which she thought was a little harder to dodge than her bird thing. Of course, her bird thing was progressing to feathers in general, and that was going to end well for her. She thought she'd be lucky if she didn't try tearing them all out before the week was over. "I feel like I'm going to some sort of show down at the OK Corral," April quipped as she walked alongside Jaime toward the Keep. "Yeah, well, as long as you guys don't get each other bleeding ..." April laughed faintly before she shook her head. This whole mess was going to just ... be a disaster by the end of the week. As they approached the back of the Keep, she looked around to see who was there. Catching sight of Jake, she lifted her hand in a wave as she stepped away from Jaime and toward Jake. Jake still didn't like people looking at him. It was worse now than it had been yesterday afternoon, but he suspected it wasn't as bad as it was going to get. "Not looking at me, right?" He called over to Jaime. "My back's to you, buddy," she called back. "I'd look at April anyway. She's prettier. You should've put that in the post." "Thought about it," Jake admitted as he gazed toward the ground before he inhaled. "So are we three two one go or what?" He asked as he lifted his head. "And don't look at me." "I'll just look toward you," April assured him, glancing over to Jaime and whoever else was there to make sure they were far enough back. She wasn't sure who she thought might show up, but she was sort of hoping they had a decent turnout of new people. Even if all those new people would be looking at her ... if they followed Jake's instructions. And she hoped they did. Not so much because she wanted to be looked at, but simply because she didn't want Jake further unsettled. "And ... go," she said as she laughed faintly. How, really, did they start something like this? There weren't any rules, and she certainly didn't want to actually hurt him. But it would be good practice for controlling her fire and just kind of fun to mess around with, right? But she'd said go and he apparently was going. She laughed as she twisted away from the ball of ice he'd propelled toward her, and she lifted her hands to start a blaze, spreading them into a shield. Since that was about the extent of her defensive power and she couldn't exactly win by defending, she tried to split her focus to both hold the fire splayed in front of her and shoot a pillar of it toward him. Jake couldn't help but laugh a little, and at least for the time being he was distracted from the idea of people watching him. As April's fire shot toward him, he countered with an ice wall of his own, watching through it as the fire struck it and spread along it. The ice was melting though and Jake redoubled his effort to thicken the shield. Which meant he wasn't attacking, which wasn't conducive to winning this thing. Holding his ice shield with one hand, Jake used the other to shoot a stream of ice at her. He was rewarded with a yelp of -- he hoped -- surprise, and he grinned as he lifted his head to look toward her. Just in time to duck a loose flying fireball. For twenty or so more minutes, they continued trading blows and blocks before April called a stop to it, laughing and breathless and worn out. Drawing her fire back into herself, she let her hands fall to her side. She was, for once, glad it was cooler out -- she was feeling a little overheated. "So who won?" Jake called with a laugh, running his hands over his head to cool himself further. It had been fun though, and a challenge, and he thought they'd both done pretty good. "We'll call it a tie. Unless you want the win since I called uncle first," April offered. "We'll call it a tie," he agreed as he exhaled contently. "That was fun," he said before he turned his eyes briefly toward whoever was around before looking away again in case he caught any of them looking at him. On that note, he thought he'd take off in a sec, but he guessed he could wait. And just hope no one was looking at him. |
