After lunch, and discovery of the box on the table for himself, Pace had taken the transfer disc back to his cabin to browse what was on it and was thrilled to see that it was some music he had requested. “Happy Birthday to me.” He sang lightly under his breath as he flipped through the track listing, a small smile on his lips. Birthdays should be happy times and he was trying to remember that but this was the first birthday he was having since his mom died. She wasn’t doing all too great last year but he had coaxed her to eat some cake before settling in to read to her for a couple hours before his father took over and told him to go out and have some fun because that’s what she really would have wanted if she was in any condition to tell him so. Fun. How was he going to manage that one here? After lighting some candles and talking to his mom, even if she couldn’t talk back Pace felt that she could hear him wherever she was: heaven, hell, limbo, somewhere in between. The place didn’t really matter so much because he wasn’t sure he believed in any of them. All that did was the fact that talking to her made him feel a little better. He decided that he might as well use the lack of rain outside to go practice with his acid, see if he could manage to get it to shoot out of his hands yet instead of just leak. Sure, it was dangerous outside, but as long as he didn’t run into anything big he should be fine. If a little one attacked, well, he could just leak acid onto it and hope like hell it burned through them quickly enough to survive the encounter. But there were none. Another added perk was that even though he couldn’t make a stream of acid, he did get a small little ball of it to shoot out of his hand once. It didn’t go very far before landing in the grass and sizzling, but it was something and he had to be proud of that. He was going to keep practicing some more even though he was starting to get tired and had a light headache from trying to push with his mind until he found the right method to get the result he wanted, but there was something…something over to his left. He wasn’t sure what it was but he needed to go see. Pace started off in that direction and the pull only got stronger. He didn’t know where he was going, only that he needed to get there. He walked, zig zagging this way and that but staying along the same path, following…something but it was what he was supposed to do. He knew it in his mind. A few steps, then around a tree, then a few more steps towards the left. He kept wandering, following the trail because he needed whatever was at the end of it. Other than the one circle around the tree, the trail led him straight to the Keep. Was this it? Was this what he needed? Yes, spoke the little voice in his mind as he walked in the door. People are here. You need the people. All the people. You need to be closer to them. He headed deeper into the building, coming across the decorations first and then the taco bar and cake. “Monkey. Because of the tail. I see what you did there.” He couldn’t help but grin. T’was a party after all. But where were the other people? Were they on the way? He needed them there. |
