While Jake had had the luxury of spending plenty of time in the Keep last week, he'd wanted to spend some time out in the terrain now that he no longer had to maintain a ladder for people interested in venturing into the Keep. Given the stories he was hearing though, he was guessing that exploring outside wasn't in the cards this week. Hallucinations, rashes, biting butterflies, bugs. He wasn't honestly sure which he'd rather have -- jungle hazards, or the wall. Both had their downsides, and he knew what he wanted was irrelevant. At least this week he wouldn't have to work at anything. Just avoiding the charming new additions to the outside world, and apparently keeping a tighter rein than usual on his mouth. No problem. He had investigated the compound in his jar, and while he assumed it was related to the jungle, he wasn't terribly interested in getting himself hurt to find out. He was sure there'd be plenty of other reports on that front. Besides, by now, he wasn't exactly interested in smearing any unlabeled thing they'd given him anywhere on him. Not that he didn't trust them, but ... well. With hours still until he was ready for bed, Jake decided to hit the pool. Clearly trekking through the jungle in the dark wasn't the best idea ever, and he had no desire to risk injury or psychological trauma just to see what they'd done to the water. It probably wasn't anything he wanted to get into anyway. It seemed better to just ride it out inside. Assuming things didn't start swarming between the Keep and the cabins, he figured he could finish the week unscathed. Then there was the next week to deal with, and the one after that, and so on until the year was done. But every day was a day closer to millions of dollars, so he remained. Upon reaching the pool, Jake fished a towel off the rack and pulled his shirt off. Since he was already clad in his trunks, all he had left to do was slip his shoes off. After doing that, he gazed at the water for a moment before he looked around. He'd had lots of practice with range and control when he was working on the ladder, but what about speed? How fast could he get this out? He knew he could build a bridge, but could he quickly build a supportive bridge? Since the pool, with its copious amounts of water, was the best place to practice, he figured why not? He knew movie tricks were just computer graphics, but there were ideas in it. Could he build a supportive construct at a pace he could run across it? Not yet, he didn't think, but getting the idea of it down seemed like a good plan. Moving around to the deep end just so he didn't accidentally trip up anyone coming in the door that was by the shallow end, Jake aimed his hands at the water. Even as the ice started to gather around the edge of the pool and extend across the water, he stepped onto it. It swayed and he heard the crack as it let go from the edge. Even as he hit the water himself he was laughing, a scattering of frozen water around him. Well, so much for that plan. Wiping his icy palms through his hair, he rolled his bare shoulders and started to randomly shoot icicles from his palms. It wasn't nearly as tiring as building the ladder had been, though he suspected that since he was submerged, it made it easier on his power to extract the water from the environment. He reasoned that if he was in a cold-but-dry climate, he wouldn't be able to produce the ice as readily without an external source of water. It was something he wanted to experiment though if the terrain ever rolled that way. When he'd finished screwing around with the ice bolts, he started to build an ice cage around himself, mostly to see if it would float and hold him while he floated. Or to freak out anyone who happened to wander in. Whichever. |
