April had concluded she was embarrassingly useless against the wall. She'd tried torching it, but the fire didn't even mark it. Her wings were useless for flight (and might always be, but definitely were now), so she set herself to the task of exploration and food-finding. She was sure other people had that covered, but it was a big dome. Maybe she'd find something on one side that wasn't on the other side. Or maybe she'd find nothing at all. Either way, she took her laundry basket with her. She figured she could fill it halfway or so and it wouldn't be too heavy to carry back -- assuming she even found food. But she could at least try, while they were busy with the wall. April wandered for a while, following paths and smaller paths, and enjoying the scenery. It occurred to her an hour or so in that there were no biting bugs. She hadn't seen any snakes, either, and she'd definitely been keeping an eye out for those. Did it mean they weren't there? No. But it was a little queer there wasn't even so much as a mosquito. Wandering in the heat and humidity had gotten to her, so when April came across a waterfall, she gave some serious consideration to standing under it. Why not? There was no one around, and she didn't think she'd circled back close to the cabins. But maybe she had; she hadn't been paying attention to lefts and rights and the curves of the path. Still, she was hot and there was no one around right now. Dropping the laundry basket on the shore near the fall, April moved to the edge of the water. She realized then she didn't want to walk back in wet clothes. So the logical thing was to drop her clothes in the basket and stand nude in the water. With a little grin, April turned to do just that, stepping out of sneakers and peeling off socks before sliding her shorts and panties down her legs and undoing the ties on her top. Once everything was in the basket, she hurried across the brief shore to the water. It was cool, despite the heat around it, and she sighed contently as she waded deeper. The water covered her shoulders before she made it to the fall, and she gazed up at it even as she swam toward it. Well, sort of swam. Her wings were held up above her back, though she could feel some of the longer feathers trailing in the water. She wondered how they'd handle water. Like a duck? If she rolled onto her back or stood under the fall, would they weigh her down and drown her? Was it really the best idea to try to find that out now? But why not? Moving carefully, April slid under the falling water. A delighted scream crossed her lips before she laughed -- the falling water was colder than the water she was in, and she tipped her head back to let it press her hair down. Her wings were heavier, she realized, which she thought meant they were absorbing the water. So not the best idea, but she thought she'd be okay. She'd just have a bitch of a back-ache later. Moving away from the falls, April splashed around in the pool. Sure, there was a wall around their food, and this wasn't going to be the best week ever, but there were bright sides to it. Like this. |
