April generally used her laptop for games, but when she opened the network app and found the video, it had been intriguing enough for her to want to watch. So she did. She watched the footage of her former foster siblings and parents, of some of her co-workers, and only after she'd been watching for a few minutes did it dawn on her to wonder how they'd gotten the footage. None of it was staged. It was all day to day stuff, a glimpse of lives going on in the outside world. Or inside world, in the case of her office-mates. That was odd, because they had passkeys to get in, and moderate security. There weren't just random cameras allowed in. Had the cameras been planted there? By who? And for how long? The answer to how the video had shown up on her computer seemed obvious enough. Eli had mentioned that Doug was good with computers, so who else would be hacking into her computer to show her that? Why he'd do that, she didn't know, but it made her uneasy. Had he been spying on her, too? Was he here to stalk her now that she was on the show? Probably. Deeply unsettled, April closed up her laptop and decided to go out. Not into the woods; she'd had a few bad encounters with a unicorn and a dragon out there. To the Keep, maybe, but the Keep had all kinds of people in it, and no one here meant her well. She was sure of that. They'd probably point and laugh at her wings or try to pull out her feathers or something. But she had to eat. While she normally would've considered bringing back something for Eli, she'd been doing her best to keep her distance from him this week. He, she was sure, meant to hurt her. So it seemed best not to leave herself vulnerable. Much of her week in the cabin had been behind a closed bedroom door, and even now she listened for sounds on the other side of the door. Deciding it was probably quiet enough, she crept out. Not seeing her roommate present, she darted to the door and rushed out into the purple grass before keeping the run toward the Keep. She was a little out of breath when she swept inside in a rush and rustle of wings, closing the door quickly behind herself. She looked around to make sure no one was around (though if she did see anyone, she promptly looked away and pretended she hadn't) and then made her way to the kitchen. Her wings were folded but not tightly, and it left a triangle of her lower back exposed as she moved. She intended to be quick, and to not linger long with anyone she might encounter. It wasn't a week she felt safe socializing, and she thought that if someone did laugh at her wings, she'd have to remind them of her other ability. Perhaps with a demonstration of burning their clothes. But maybe she'd be lucky. |
