Jake wasn't sure what to think of this terrain. The colors were fucked up, the trees were wrong, and he didn't like it. Still, there wasn't a hell of a lot to do. He didn't have much by way of plans for the decoration box except maybe giving it to Dahlia if she wanted it. He was sure she could find more of a use for it than he could. She was more likely to win, anyway. So after hanging around the Keep for a while, Jake decided to go exploring. He was bored and it seemed like a perfectly reasonable idea. With a bottle of water in the pocket of his shorts and an apple in the other pocket, he headed out. He chose paths at random, winding his way deeper into the dark forest. He should have, he realized, brought a flashlight. It was dim outside of the forest, and it was dark inside of it. Dahlia would like it, he reflected with a faint scowl. It was probably her damn fault the forest was dark. While part of him recognized the utter irrationality of that thought, most of him didn't think much beyond the fact that Dahlia and dark shared an association in his mind now, if they hadn't before. The forest was dark, therefore she'd made it that way. Rolling his shoulders, Jake moved toward the faint glow on the path ahead. With only normal human vision, he had to get close to pick out the fact it was a bird and not a random glow or mysterious lamp post in the middle of the forest like fucking Narnia or something. He stopped to look at the bird, but apparently the bird wasn't inclined to be looked at. "Phobic?" He asked when the bird put its back to him. He laughed quietly as he moved closer, trying to look. It was red and gold and orange and it looked like fire -- which should have been enough of a hint to back the fuck off. But it wasn't, and he didn't. The bird squawked, and it turned to face Jake he realized he shouldn't have even come into the forest tonight. He had the tangled desire to thank April for the practices and curse her all at the same time as the bird breathed a jet of fire at him. He threw up a shield and jetted a couple of ice bolts at the thing until it flew off. That wasn't enough though, and Jake pursued the glow deeper into the forest, shooting jets of ice at it whenever he got close. Eventually he managed to ice its wing and he smirked darkly as he approached it. Somehow, April was responsible for this. Why? He had no fucking idea. But who the fuck else was going to sic a firebird on him? Wings and fire. That's what she was all about. His face twisted into a slight sneer as he continued to shoot ice at the bird as it flopped and struggled (but somehow didn't die) and eventually simply laid still under the casing of ice. Kicking it once for good measure, Jake realized with further annoyance he had no idea which of the paths he'd come up. His blue eyes swept between the two forks and he listened intently for a moment before he sighed and shrugged and started at random down one that he thought was going to take him back to the cabins. Wouldn't it just be the icing on a very fucked up evening if he got himself lost in the woods at night? |
