A Specific Kind of Different
Characters: Lucas, open or it can just be a narrative
When: Friday morning
Location: Between the cabins and the Keep
Warnings/Rating: None expected
Summary: Lucas tests his speed.
Status: potentially open
The cabin felt emptier when Lucas strolled into the cabin's little kitchen that morning. He hadn't interacted much with Kit in the short time she was there, but there was a distinct difference with her gone. It wasn't necessarily an unpleasant change, but it was still one he noticed. Lucas had to admit that he was more accustomed to living on his own, though. He probably should have mentioned to someone that she was gone, but he kept expecting her to reappear. Even still, he checked what had been her room one more time, looking for clues that she might be back before going about his morning routine. There were losers in every game, he supposed. Lucas found himself unconsciously hurrying slightly as he searched for where he'd placed his soccer ball and grabbed his clothes for the day. He'd considered what had been said, and today was the day he would test whether he really did have any kind of mysterious powers given to him. Maybe he could have tested it a little indoors (he'd knocked a glass off the counter that night and caught it before it hit the floor, but that couldn't prove anything -- Lucas had always had good reflexes), but it seemed like a more certain experiment to simply sprint. Besides. With the Keep closed off to him for the majority of the week, he needed other ways to stay in shape now that he couldn't utilize the pool. Tucking the soccer ball under one arm, Lucas stepped out of the cabin and onto the now (somewhat) familiar terrain. He dropped the soccer ball to the grass after he'd gone a few paces toward the Keep and idly kicked it along in front of him for a few minutes. Even without anyone around (as far as he could see), Lucas felt a twinge of embarrassment at his plan. He almost wished he'd waited for evening, but the day was cloudy already and he didn't want to risk a storm delaying him later on. And no matter how flat the grass looked now, he knew that trying to sprint at night would be asking for a twisted ankle at best. Lucas put off the inevitable for a few more minutes before giving the soccer ball a solid kick. He watched it tumble across the grass, slowly shifting his stance and concentrating. He would reach the ball before it reached that tuft of grass. He knew how fast he could go. He could gauge in his head how long it would take him. Before he could think about it more, Lucas shoved off from the grass. The hollow feeling in his stomach twisted, making him feel like he'd gone longer between meals than usual. He had enough time for a moment of distraction as he considered that, and then suddenly he was at the Keep. He balked -- it had come up too fast. Lucas threw out his arms, stumbling suddenly to a stop that he had to roll into when his momentum was too much. He jarred his shoulder slightly, but he hadn't been going fast enough to do too much damage. He stayed where he landed, flat on his back and staring up, bemused, at the sky. Something about that was off. He was going to have to think about this for a moment before trying again. Had he zoned out? That wasn't his normal speed. It wasn't abnormal for a human to achieve, but it wasn't normal either. And he hadn't been training. Lucas blew out a breath and draped an arm over his eyes. He would just take this one step at a time. |
