The sound was faint, but pervasive. It encroached on his sleep, and he opened one eye slowly to adjust to the light in the room before he lifted his head to listen better. Kitten. Distressed kitten. Loud kitten, because it wasn't either of the ones in his cabin. Flake was stretched out on the foot of the bed and he imagined Ice was somewhere. But it wasn't Ice's meow. And besides that, it was muffled. Distant. And it didn't stop. Tris ran his hand over his face before he eased out of bed. Flake lifted his head briefly before dropping it on the bed and beginning his morning stretches and yawns. Tris took a couple minutes to wash up and dress, and by the time he'd filled up the kibble bowls, the sound was still going on. Increased volume. Increased distress. So the obvious solution was to go check it out. Picking up the bat he'd borrowed from Jaime since he didn't have his own weapon (though he had some on his request list), Tris ensured his phone was in his pocket before he started out. He broke into an easy jog, following the sound. It led him to one of the outer cabins, and by the time he'd reached it the meowing was frantic. Why wasn't whoever lived there taking care of it? Were they deaf? Somewhere else? Except as he got to the door, he got why. There was no one there. No name on the door. No sounds by the meows inside. "Ah, fuck," he swore quietly as he ran his free hand through his hair. Who had been here? Pulling out his phone, he scrolled through the contacts. Up and down and up again until he saw. Aiden. "Shit," Tris muttered before he scrolled down to Doug's name to call him. It seemed easier somehow than waiting for him to wake up to a text or something. Hopefully he had his sound turned on. Tris moved around to the window, tapping the screen enough to make a sound against the glass. When he saw the kitten, he waved -- like the kitten could understand that -- and he waited for Doug to answer the phone. And boy oh boy did he hope Doug could phase into someone's cabin that wasn't their own -- and pull out a kitten when he came back through. |
