New girls have cleaning duty. That was what Baby Doll was told and that was exactly where she found herself; on her hands and knees, scrubbing the hallway floor, listening to the sights and sounds of the stage. It was Blondie’s show tonight, an audacious Arabian inspired dance that looked something like a combination between a belly dancer and a sword swallower. Blondie herself was adorned in a golden skirt draped with coins that jingled harmoniously with every movement and a headdress ornate enough to befit a queen. Meanwhile Baby still found herself the uniform from her orphanage, they hadn’t bothered to give her a change of clothes.
She was beginning to understand the allure of dancing. It wasn’t about art or expression or even glamour. It was about competition and survival. If she wanted to have a decent room, better food than the meager scraps they offered her now and if she wanted to go to bed without aching arms and legs from all the vegetable chopping, laundry folding, floor scrubbing and the like, she’d have to establish a clientele of her own… and in order to do that… she’d have to dance.
The young woman sighed shifting on her legs and pausing a moment to rotate her wrist and stretch it, though it throbbed in pain from the vast amount of work she’d already done that day. It was quite late already. She took a moment to day-dream, closing her eyes softly and wondering just what kind of dance she would invent to tantalize the clients before leaning over and returning to work. With her mind so distracted, she hadn’t been paying attention to where she was moving and didn’t see the shard of glass on the floor by her knee. Letting out a whimper of pain, she sat back in horror and panicked, not because of the deep burning cut mixed with cleaning solution and red sticky liquid rolling down her pale porcelain skin but because her blood was slowly spreading across what had been a sparkling clean floor. Blue would be so angry!
