WHEN: Sunday, October 14, 1998 at approximately 10:50am
WHERE: Caerphilly Catapults pitch.
SUMMARY: Aidan has something to say to Viktor.
RATINGS/WARNING: G
STATUS: Complete.
Having to sit out the game yesterday had been hell for Aidan, and was only exacerbated by the loss the Kestrels had sustained. It was all his fault, and he knew it, but that didn't make it any easier to bear. He had one more week of watching their reserve play in his place and had to hope that the kid was at least good enough to win next weekend. But that was neither here nor there at this particular moment. Aidan had other parts of his punishment to face up to, and today he was apologising to Krum (as loathsome as that idea was).
He had chosen to come here, to the Caerphilly pitch, to give it. It was perhaps a crazy idea. He could have issued a press release, he could have arranged a meeting at BIL headquarters, but no, it was important to Aidan to do this here, in Caerphilly, in person with Krum. Aidan's own professional standards had been rocked by what had happened, by what he had done, and he needed to make that right again. This was the only way he knew how. He had lost, Krum had won, and he needed to accept that.
So the Kestrels management had been in contact with the Catapults management to organise this public apology at the pitch. Ten minutes before the balls were launched into the air, Aidan strode out onto the Caerphilly pitch towards Krum who was waiting as arranged in the centre. The reaction of the crowed was exactly what Aidan expected, and he tried to tune out the boo-ing as he walked, his own conviction that this was the right thing to do keeping him going. (And if he was honest with himself, he wanted Connor to be proud of him too.)
Arriving in the centre of the pitch, Aidan nodded to Krum and the rest of the Catapults, waiting as the manager of the team calmed the crowd down and explained what was going to happen. Then he passed the microphone to Aidan and he focused on Krum. He couldn't stand the idea of this man dating Trása, but she had made her feelings quite clear. Connor might think he should tell Trása how he felt, but as far as he was concerned, he had, and Trása had chosen to leave. How much more clearer did it get?
"I'm here because the Tribunal insisted on a public apology, but I'd be apologising even if they hadn't required it. Just not so publicly perhaps," Aidan began, ignoring the chatter of the crowd to focus on Krum. "You know why I did it. I'm sure I don't have to explain. But regardless of why, what I did was wrong and I should never have brought personal issues out onto the pitch. So for that, I'm sorry."
Aidan held out his hand to Krum, wondering if the other man would shake it or ignore it.
