This was probably the only moment in her life when she was glad that Addison was always unfailingly polite; even she knew that loudly arguing during a party was bad form. She still didn’t quite understand how he did- it was remarkable, really, that he had never lost his temper with her, despite the fact that she had made a habit of goading and provoking him- but for once she was thankful.
Maybe it just had something to do with the fact that there was nothing wrong with his behavior. It hadn’t taken her much time in the real world to realize that being outspoken and stubborn didn’t always get you ahead. Her utter lack of diplomacy- and often, respect- never really hurt her during school, but she had found herself in plenty of trouble when her internship starting. Mouthing off to your editor about how what you’re expected to write is idiotic and a waste of time is apparently bad form. Who would have thought.
And furthermore, there hadn’t really been anything wrong with Addison. That too did not take her too long to figure out. He was still too polite for her taste, but that wasn’t quite the inherent flaw that she had always dismissed it as. He hardly deserved all of the hell that she put him through on a regular basis for little to no reason. Was that guilt she was feeling? Maybe, but she was too proud to label it is such just yet.
“Er, yeah, thanks. You too” She still hadn’t come to terms with the fact that yes, Addison Montague was standing right in front her. She couldn’t help but wonder if it’d be horribly rude if she asked if she could get a drink before they caught up or whatever it was they’d be doing, but the implication of that would be that she needed to be drunk to talk to him- hardly what she wanted him to think. She would just have to suck it up and deal with it.
“Oh, I’m not covering it. Thank Merlin.” Her distaste for the event was written plainly on her face before she tried on a more neutral expression. “We’re just here to network, make contacts, all that.” She’d much rather be doing that elsewhere but she hadn’t been given much choice. “So, uh, what have you been up to?” She knew he was with the Ministry but she had never really bothered with finding out what exactly he was doing; after all, she hadn’t expected to ever see him again.
