Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO: Hermione & Ron
WHERE: their flat & then the pound
WHEN: Wednesday around noon
WHAT: pet shopping cuz Crooks is dead :(
RATING: duno

Hermione was at work for three hours before the Head of her Department sent her home. She had been awake for six hours, five of which she had spent crying. It wasn't exactly productive to be at work when you smeared more papers than you actually filed. And Hermione, ever one to throw herself into her work, had been trying to do just that... and failing miserably. She had woken up at six in the morning, as usual. She had taken her shower, as usual. And then she sat down at the breakfast table with her breakfast (big shocker there, huh?) and that morning's issue of the Daily Prophet.

It wasn't until seven fifteen (exactly, because Hermione's morning routine was just that regular) that Hermione realized something was wrong with Crookshanks. She opened his can of cat food and he didn't come running. She called. She searched. And she made herself frantic. She even woke Ron up. And at seven fifty-nine, half-way through the time she usually spent exercising, she found her cat. Curled up behind the toilet. Dead.

Well Hermione was in shock. She rushed off to work and left Ron to take care of her familiar. But she spent the next three hours sobbing. And now she was headed home. Not that she wanted to go home, just that it didn't appear she had any choice in the matter. She stepped through the door, dropping her purse wherever (a very not Hermione thing to do) and flopped down on the couch. She probably looked a mess but she really didn't care. Not that she normally did, just that she hated when Ron saw her crying. It just seemed like she couldn't stop today.

Ron thought Hermione was bonkers for going to work after finding Crookshanks behind the toilet. If it had been pig he probably would have taken a mental day and taken care of things himself, but Ron no longer pretended like he understood Hermione Granger. He let her go and did his best to deal with the body, calling the local magical menagerie for help. They told him to wrap the animal in a towel and take him to the animal hospital. So that's what Ron did and he even went so far as to use his Quidditch bonus to get Crookshanks a proper casket and headstone. He wasn't sure if Hermione would want a funeral though so he left that decision open.

Ron arrived home before Hermione and cleaned the bathroom with his version of a cleansing spell before going into the kitchen for a bit of cereal. He perked up when he heard the door open and saw Hermione flop down on the couch. He cringed unsure of what to do, but then got up from his chair and sat down next to her. "Alright?" he asked her.

Hermione had needed to get out of the flat. There was no way she could sit around here where poor Crooks had died. Although in retrospect, work was probably not the best place to go. She had gotten nothing done and now everyone probably thought she was a loony. Not that most of them didn't already, but that was for completely different reasons. Anyone who worked full-time in one department and was training for another had to be a nutter, right? Well, Hermione didn't think so, but no one else agreed.

Looking up when Ron came over, Hermione just kind of shrugged. She had managed to get herself to stop crying, but that was about it. She still looked miserable. "Did you take care of him?" It was a stupid question. Of course he had. Ron could be pretty thoughtless sometimes, but he wasn't a complete arse.

Ron reached out to put an arm around Hermione and gave her shoulders a bit of a squeeze. He wasn't good with loss and with as much loss as they had both suffered due to the war it was almost served as a reminder of it all. "Yeah," he replied. "He's getting a proper burial in the pet cemetery. I wasn't sure if there was somewhere else you might want him buried? I thought about The Burrow, but I wasn't sure."

"No the cemetery is fine." Hermione didn't really care where he was buried. She had never been particular about such things. Although she had made sure to set up a place for her parents right near her Poppa when the war was on. She had tried her best to make sure everything was prepared in case anything went terribly wrong. Crooks, though, she just hadn't been ready to lose. It was a horrible reminder of the war and something she just didn't want to deal with. She was thankful that Ron had been on top of things at home while she had spent the morning sulking at work.

Ron nodded and fell silent. He wasn't sure what else to say. When he lost Fred he hadn't wanted anyone to try and comfort him. He wasn't sure if Hermione was the same way about loss though they had been through quite a bit of it together. He remained silent for quite some time before finally perking up with what he thought was an amazing idea. "We should get a dog."

Hermione leaned toward Ron. She rested her head on his shoulder, hoping she wouldn't start crying again. The silence was comfortable. Surprisingly they'd gotten used to comfortable silences recently. Hermione didn't mind sitting and not talking to him if they were both busy with something. It wasn't awkward anymore. And she was thankful for that.

Although his next sentence was fairly surprising. Honestly, a puppy? After she had just lost Crooks? Well, that was definitely a Ron thing to say. Hermione wasn't even sure how to respond. She sighed and shrugged. Hermione didn't even have it in her to argue right now. "Whatever."
