Who: Fleur Weasley and Roger Davies
When: 4 September 2004
Where: Fleur's medical office
What: Roger's been delaying his physical
Status: Closed/Incomplete
Rating: PG

Fleur had been a bit cruel to Roger, she knew. She could have possibly squeezed him in at 11:30, but if she ended up running behind because of him, she'd have an irritable husband. It would only be worse if it was Roger who had held her up. She would never understand the male psyche. He couldn't get it through his head that she'd married HIM, not Roger.

She chewed her lip furiously, muttering in French as she scratched her quill across the parchment. Nearly all the physicals were done. This afternoon she'd be spending several hours completing her notes and signing off on all the documents necessary to prove the Wasps were a clean team. There were perhaps five who hadn't needed physicals, having had them in May or June. She'd do their blood work on Monday.

She pulled out the next form and began to fill it out.

Despite his preference for sleeping late, and not being a morning person, Roger was knocking on the door to Fleur's office. Sure, he could have taken care of it much sooner, but he'd put it off intentionally. Not that he really disliked them, in fact, it was quite the opposite. "Only you could get me up this early," he said, smiling slightly as he leaned against the doorway. "So, how do you want me?"

Though what he'd said had been perfectly innocent, the glint in his eyes showed that there was more. For some reason, he couldn't not flirt with her, at least a little. Yes, he knew that she was married, and would likely not do anything more, but there was that history between them. Besides, given his reputation, she might be offended if he didn't.

Fleur looked up from her paperwork as he entered. She rolled her eyes jovially, "And here I thought you hadn't seen your bed yet." It wasn't that she expected he'd flirt, well, she did, but it was Roger. If he wasn't flirting, she'd likely be treating him for something horrific. It was simply what was expected. The spotlight did funny things to people, she decided, and he was definitely one of them.

"Sorry to disappoint, but nothing overly fancy, just stand in the cleared area for me." She smiled at him. She did enjoy his humor, his company, but it was always best if she remembered their history, and how she didn't expect it to last. Part of her always wondered if he'd realized how soon after their break-up she'd moved to England. It was likely best not to think about it too much. But the fact they'd not gotten back together just meant they weren't meant to be.

She flicked her wand and her dictation quill began to scratch across parchment while the air around Roger shimmered slightly

"Oh, I've seen it," Roger said. "Just haven't gotten any sleep yet." That part was true at least, though more due to the fact that he'd been out all night. He'd actually been a good boy for once.

Moving to the spot indicated, he glanced at her as she went to work. Of course he had noticed, though at the time, he had still been in school. By the time he'd gotten out, still slightly focused on starting his Quidditch career, he'd heard that she'd gotten engaged. He had wanted to kick himself for not doing anything sooner, and the following year he'd been to involved in practices and trying to earn a spot on the reserve team he hadn't noticed that he hadn't gotten an invite.

Then fate saw fit to bring them together again, player and team mediwitch. Had it been something actually discussed between them, it likely would have made things difficult and awkward. So, instead he'd chosen a more laid back, friendly, albeit slightly flirtatious manner. "Would have done this sooner, but wanted to save the best for last."

Fleur raised an eyebrow as he began to speak, though when he added the second part, she chuckled and shook her head. "How is it all of you seem able to pull such hours and still show up for practice on time is beyond me."

When she'd applied to be the mediwitch for the Wasps, she hadn't quite realized she was applying for the team Roger played for. The shock had been easily countered, though she often wondered why they hadn't lasted. Far more frequently than she admitted, even to herself.

"Ah, so you are my best then? I wonder what your teammates would say to such boasts." Her tone was light and lilting. She glanced at the parchment while retrieving the empty phial with his name on it. "Much better shape than last season's start, Davies. New workout regiment?"

"Well, I can't speak for anyone else on the team, though for myself, I've done nothing but work on endurance and stamina as well as strength training," Roger said. "And it's been quite successful, I must say."

"Undoubtedly, they would say the same for themselves, though I let the numbers speak. After all, I had the most goals made last season. Hard to argue with numbers like that." He watched as she scribbled the results down and produce a vial. "More slight alteration to my regular," he said. "Save the majority of the physical stuff until night, when it's not as hot, so I get to work out longer without worrying about heat exhaustion. During the day I stick more to regular work outs."

Fleur shook her head, chuckling to herself. It was hard not to enjoy the infectious confidence these men exuded with every breath. It was part of the appeal, this rugged masculinity.

"True, though that also ends up holding you to higher standards. Quite the pressure you've got this year. Turning out another championship."

She approached him with the phial held neatly in one hand. "Your arm please?" she asked.

She put on her most professional face for this part. Touching him for the first time in months always jolted her. It was one of the few times she couldn't deny the chemistry they'd once shared, still could if she wasn't careful. Narrowing her eyes, she forced those thoughts from her mind. She was married.

Maybe she should give Bill the child he'd been wanting. Maybe it would make things more stable. Better.

"Of course it does," Roger said, holding out his arm. Somehow, this always seemed the hardest part. Not because it hurt or anything, but merely due to the close proximity and the fact that there was actual contact. Flirt a lot he might do, okay, so he did, he still wouldn't do anything with someone that was taken, unless they made the first move. Though the fact that they'd once been together didn't make that any easier.

"Yes, well, if you aren't improving from the previous season, you're on the way out the door to the reserve team, or worse," he said, focusing on the conversation. "There's plenty of young talent that's always looking to make a name for themselves. A few seasons ago that was me, in fact. And I have no intention of letting anyone replace me any time soon. Barring anything unforeseen, like a few too many bludgers to the head, I've still got quite a few years in me. And I've been more than fortunate in not having any major mishaps so far."

He chuckled lightly. "Don't think I've even reached my peak yet. And can you honestly see me doing anything other than this? Sitting at home with the two cats? Or some stuffy desk job in the ministry? That is so not my style."

Fleur chuckled, focusing on the conversation and her task. At least the delicate nature of drawing blood ensured her concentration there.

"True, I've seen some of the new recruits, the trials are getting even more competitive. I'm glad it's not me who's having to decide on the team. Competition in my field isn't quite the same, but I do see what you guys go through to stay on the team."

She looked up at him briefly, shielded by her professional demeanor. "Yes, can we attempt to avoid bludgers this year? Despite your record for scoring even after being hit, or perhaps because of it, I wonder how many times I'll be patching you up this season. Oui?"

She withdrew her wand and corked the phial. Her heart beat a little faster, as it always did when she heard the players talking about their careers. The vicarious adrenaline rush was part of what kept her here, part of why she insisted on it.

"No, I can't imagine you behind a desk. I think you'd get bored."

She moved to her desk, glancing at the parchment and nodding to herself. "I think once I've fun the blood tests, you should be set to play."

"Yeah, it's tough," Roger said, focusing on the conversation, rather than whatever test it was that she was doing that required her close inspection and touch. "Though I know that I for one wouldn't have it any other way. Somehow it all just disappears in the rush of the wind and the roar of the crowd."

He looked rather surprised at the accusation. "What? It's not like I try to be hit. Actually, do rather well at avoiding them, I think. I only get hit once out of every what, three, four? And most of the time it's nothing major. Besides, you'd think we didn't care for you if we didn't see you, you know.

He rolled his sleeve back down, hazarding a glance at the notes she was writing. "So, that means that for the moment, my career is in your hands. Well, definitely wouldn't want to do anything that might... put that in jeopardy, would I?"

Fleur laughed, levelling her gaze at him playfully. "No? And here I thought you were ensuring you were hit to garner sympathy from the fans." His own accusation was taken easily in stride. She was grateful for her job, but she couldn't say that she would have felt neglected if they did not get injured.

"Oh yes, I do appreciate you lot keeping me employed. I would be most devastated were you not to occasionally grace me with your presence." Her accent aided the lilt in her voice.

As he spoke, she paused in her writing, then arched a blonde eyebrow. "And what is it you would do that would jeopardize my giving you a clear pass?" Her voice wasn't quite as playful, with a slight hint of uncertainty. She wasn't sure why the suggestion bothered her, or even how.

"Would I do that? Okay, maybe once or twice, but not exactly for sympathy, and not exactly from 'fans'," Roger said. "First year on the reserves, I'd met this masseuse, and she could do wonders with her hands. So... I might have gotten an intentional to ensure an afterwards massage." It had gone beyond that, though such details really didn't need to be discussed.

Ah, such accents should be illegal, especially when they belonged to someone that looked incredible, you had... possibly still had, feelings for, and just happened to be something that was not on the menu.

"Hopefully, nothing," he answered. Sure, there were definite thoughts that were not of the strict professional type relationship that they were supposed to maintain, but that's all that they were. He'd never really act on them, not while she was happily married. Though, were that to change... He blinked, hoping that his looks hadn't given a hint of his thoughts.

Fleur shook her head, closing her eyes, completely amused. He was practically shameless, though undoubtedly, that bravado was part of his charm. She enjoyed his company still, no matter their past. She didn't often think of their past, more often, she thought about how easy conversing him always was.

Still, he always sent a bit of a shiver down her spine with his flirting. He lived and breathed danger and she enjoyed feeling it near him.

"No, of course you wouldn't. Merlin forbid you actually end up properly injured and unable to play. That would be just terrible." She was teasing, but she really did not wish him ill. He was a fantastic chaser for a formidable team. And he was a good friend.

She waved her hand, shaking her head, "You are absolutely terrible, Roger Davies. You should not be allowed near witches' hearts."

Tempting though it may be to get injured and have her working on him, Roger knew that such a thing would only lead to something that wouldn't be good for either of them. Not to mention the time he'd spend out, and possibly lose his position. Definitely not a price he was willing to pay.

"I'll have you know that I am far from terrible," he said. "There are plenty of witches who can testify to that fact. Besides, it's not their hearts that I'm interested in being near." That was certainly true, and safe to say, since he was being rather general. He hadn't said that he'd had such thoughts about her on occasion, right? Right. So, no harm in mentioning vague generalizations.

"Someday, maybe, but I just haven't met her yet, I don't think."
