REAPER BOY
by LJ's wrenlet.

It was written as part of nanowrimo in 2003, and it's a QAF/Dead Like Me crossover. Have no fear if you've never seen DLM. I hadn't when I first read it, and you'll understand everything just fine.

Now, it is a death fic. If you love death fic and don't want to be spoiled, ignore the cut. But if you don't love death fic and don't usually read it, allow me to twist your arm explain...

Justin dies at the prom in this fic, but he's not really dead. He's made a grim reaper.

He looks different, and has a different persona, but he's still in Pittsburgh, and he's still Justin inside.

I find the fic incredibly beautiful, but it's definitely sad as well. Justin is mourned. Justin is dead to his family and friends, but he has to go on, and try and make a new "life" for himself. He stuggles, and he does his best, but it's definitely not easy.

Brian also dies at the end of this fic, but in death, they are together again. That's why I can read this fic when I can't read other deathfics.

I love this fic. The characterisation is amazing. The OC's fresh and interesting. It's a magic world wrenlet creates. I hope you'll give it a chance.

if that's eaier to follow.

Have many, many tissues handy. Enjoy.

It took me a long time to get around to reading this fic, not because of the death/angst but because of the crossover factor. But you're right, it's a very moving fic and well worth reading even if you haven't seen the other show.

It's incredibly moving! So moving I've only read it like 4 times in my life. I can't handle it any more than that!

I hadn't seen the show when I first read it, but I have since then and now I'm a huge fan of it too.

I have never seen the other show but whereas I can't say that I love this fic, how can I love a death fic, but it is sooo good. I have read it a couple of times and it should be a must read.

I've read this one before and I agree, it's great. When I read it the first time I didn't read the summary or AN closely so I didn't realize it was a crossover until I finished it. I thought the writer had made up the whole thing. So yeah, you definitely don't need to know anything about the show to enjoy the story. I got so sucked in and as the end approached... goodness, the tears certainly started flowing. Thanks for retreading a death!fic. I like them a lot and there are so few good ones (or any at all) out there and there's so much death!fic hate... it's just nice to have someone pimping a really good one like Reaper Boy.

You're welcome. I only have one other death fic I'd like to retread. It's the best one ever, imo, in terms of being a traditional death fic. (I don't count this).

I haven't read it in years and I probably never will again because it just hurts that much. I don't know how you can stand reading them!

That's exactly why I like reading them - because it just hurts that much! When I'm in the mood for a good cry I know reading one of the handful of really good death!fics I've found will get me there. Of course sometimes I'm like everyone else and avoid them because I just want to read schmoopy happy post-513 fics... but then again some of the best death!fics are those too. What is this "best one ever" you speak of? I know how it is and you must space out the death!fic recs so you don't upset the masses, but can you email it to me? pendulumchanges @ gmail dot com. Chances are I've already read it seeing as I seek out death!fics, but I'm hoping I've just found another one!

I absolutely love this fic. I've only read it once and absolutely bawled my eyes out, but it was just so good. I've now seen all of Dead Like Me, so I think it may be time to finally re-read it... Thanks for the rec!

Thank you for the rec. I just finished reading it for the first time and the end was so beautiful and heartbreaking, I was crying so hard. Now I'm not sure if I'll be able to sleep!

I didn't love this fic, but I finished reading it so it means I didn't think it's bad. I liked the original characters (the non-reapers are OC, no?) which is rare, I generally don't welcome OC that well.

I just think it could have been better. And Brian was barely there. Many things felt rushed (seeing that it was for nano probably that's a given). I remember another death fic (also post season 1) I read, quite a long one. It sucked in general and I didn't finish it, but one tiny part at the beginning was truly heart wrenching, and that's also what's missing in this Reaper Boy fic, because I didn't feel sad reading this. Except for the too short part about Knox dealing with Curt's death. I liked Knox.

Still, thank you for the recs.
