Heads turned as the three walked into the Liberty Diner as it wasn’t often Brian Kinney came to the diner holding onto two people’s hands. The fact that one of those hands was his six year old son, Gus, was taken into consideration. It was the other man who was with father and son, a man who entered the scene when he was only seventeen years old, Justin Taylor. The group found an empty booth and sat down.
“So, Sonnyboy, what do you want for breakfast?” Brian asked.
“Pancakes and sausage!” Gus replied with the enthusiasm of a six year old.
“ Of course you do! All those carbs and fat,” Brian laughed as Justin rolled his eyes.
“At least he eats!” Justin said while smiling at Gus. “Right Gus?”
“Right Justin! Where are we going after breakfast daddy?”
“Oh I don’t know I thought maybe I’d stop in at Kinnetic and work all day…”
“Daddy!! You promised no work while I was here!” Gus pouted.
“Don’t worry Gus, your daddy is only teasing,” Justin said. “At least he better be or he will be really sorry later tonight.”
“Why Justin? Will you spank him?” At this Brian laughed.
“I think that’s the other way around…” Brian said as Justin blushed.
“Hey boys,” Debbie said as she kissed Gus’ cheek. “Whatcha having?”
“Hi Deb,” Brian smiled at the waitress who was also like a mother to him. “Sonnyboy wants pancakes and sausage with some milk. Sunshine probably wants the same, right?”
“Of course!” Justin said. “How are you Debbie?”
“I’m good honey. And Brian, what can I get you besides coffee?”
“An egg white omelet with wheat toast.”
“Wow, I’m impressed,” Justin said to Brian.
“Well, I gotta keep up my strength if I’m going to chase you guys around all day.”
“So, what are we doing after we eat Daddy?” Gus again asked.
“Whatever you want to do Gus, it’s your day.”
“Yay!!”
Later that day the three walked into the house in West Virginia which Brian had bought for him and Justin over a year ago. They were tired, but laughing.
“Daddy, I had so much fun today! I love being with you and Justin!”
“I’m glad Gus. We love you being with us,” Brian said quietly as he hugged Gus.
“Me too Gus,” Justin said as he smiled at Brian.
“Okay, time to get ready for bed Sonnyboy, you know the drill. Go get ready for a bath, one of us will be up in a minute.”
“Okay daddy, can we watch a movie after my bath?” Gus gave his best puppy dog look to Brian.
“Gus, it’s past your bedtime now, you know that,” Justin said trying to take the blame from Brian.
“But Justin, I don’t want to go to sleep yet!” Gus pouted.
“Hey, come on now Sonnyboy,” Brian said. “We have all day tomorrow still. We have lots of time.”
“But I miss you when I’m not here,” tears filled Gus’ eyes as the long day caught up to him. “Mommy says I can’t stay here too long or else I’ll get in your and Justin’s way,” Gus said.
“Oh Gus, your mommy was teasing!” Justin said. “You are definitely not in our way!”
“That’s right Gus. You can come here whenever you want to, you know that,” Brian said wondering why Lindsay would say that to their son.
“I tried to tell Mommy and Momma that but they laughed at me. They told me you may say I could stay with you whenever I want to but you don’t mean it. Is that true daddy? Do you and Justin not want me to visit anymore?” Tears streamed down Gus’ face.
“Gus, I love you and I want to see you as much as I can. That means I want you to visit as much as possible too. I don’t know why your mommies said that to you, but I love it when you stay with me and Justin.” Brian held the little boy to him, silently cursing the two women.
“That’s right Gus,” Justin reinforced. “We love you! And we love when you visit!”
“Okay,” Gus said quietly. “You won’t tell my mommies I told you, right? They’ll be mad at me because I wasn’t supposed to tell you what they said. They might not let me visit again!”
“Hey, calm down Gus,” Brian said. “We won’t tell them. Promise. Right Justin?” Brian looked at Justin.
“That’s right. Now, why don’t you and I go upstairs and I’ll help you with your bath, okay?”
“Okay Justin.” Justin took Gus’ hand as they walked up the stairs.
“I’ll be up in a minute,” Brian said as he walked towards the kitchen.
Once Gus was settled in his bed sleeping Brian and Justin went downstairs. Justin sat down on the couch and motioned for Brian to join him. Brian was heading towards the liquor cart, but Justin’s words stopped him, “Brian, you don’t need that. Please come and sit with me.”
Brian sighed as he turned towards Justin. “Why do they say that shit to him? Don’t they realize what it does to him? I mean is it so awful that he likes to be with us?”
“I don’t know Brian. Ever since they decided not to move to Canada things have been different with them.” Brian sat beside Justin.
“Do you think they blame me because I wouldn’t give them money to move to Canada?”
“I honestly don’t know. But it makes sense because right after that it seemed Lindsay didn’t want Gus to spend time here. Of course she was less than thrilled when I refused to go to New York to be an artist.” Justin shook his head, “And don’t start Brian. I am not going to New York and I have no desire to go to New York other than to visit!”
“But Justin, she said you needed to live there in order to get your art noticed. Maybe she’s right. Maybe you’re giving up your future to stay with me.”
“Brian! Stop it! I can paint here! I don’t need to be in New York! I am not having this discussion with you again! We were talking about Gus!”
“Okay okay! I’m so sick of everyone thinking I don’t know how to take care of my son!”
“Do you think we should try to talk to Lindsay and Melanie about this?”
“Not now. We have all day tomorrow with Gus. I’m going to call Lindsay in the morning and suggest Gus stay tomorrow night as well. I can take him to school on Monday before going to work. I want to see what kind of response I get to that. You don’t mind do you?” Brian looked at Justin knowing what he was going to say.
“Of course I don’t care if Gus spends another night with us, you know that! Hell, I wouldn’t care if he moved in permanently!”
“I know,” Brian smiled and leaned over to kiss Justin. “I think I’m ready to go to bed, what about you?”
“Sounds like a great idea,” Justin said as they kissed again.
The next day when Brian called Lindsay to see if Gus could stay the night she didn’t answer her phone. Brian thought nothing of it and went into his home office to check his emails. He wasn’t sure what they were going to do with Gus that day but was hoping to spend the day at home with Justin and Gus.
“Hey there you are,” Justin walked into the office and kissed Brian. “Everything okay?”
“Yeah, I was hoping Lindsay would have called back by now but she hasn’t. Where’s Gus?”
“He’s watching a movie. He’s been kind of quiet and says he wants to stay here today.”
“Good, ‘cause that’s exactly what I want to do,” Brian stood and took Justin into his arms holding him tightly.
“Brian, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” he sighed. “I don’t know. I hate feeling that Lindsay and Melanie don’t believe I can be a good father to Gus.”
“I don’t believe that. Lindsay wanted you to be his father for a reason, she loves you.”
“Yeah yeah, everyone loves the asshole Brian Kinney…”
“Oh stop it!” Justin smiled. “I love you and Gus loves you…we’re the only ones who matter.”
“I know. I love you both too.” Brian’s phone rang. “It’s Lindsay.”
“I’m going to go watch the movie with Gus.”
“Hey Linds, how are you?”
“Brian, is something wrong? Do you need us to get Gus already?” Lindsay laughed.
“Why do you always think I can’t take care of my son?” Brian asked quietly. “Ever since you and Melanie realized you couldn’t move to Canada things have been strained between us.”
“Oh Brian, relax. Everyone knows taking care of a child is not you’re idea of a fun time!”
“I’m not like that anymore…”
“Oh please,” Lindsay laughed. “You’ve think because you told Justin you love him and convinced him not to go to NY that you’ve changed? All you’ve done is ruined Justin’s live!”
“What? I’ve been telling him to go to NY, he doesn’t want to, and I am not going to force him, or make him so unhappy he leaves me!”
“Why would you want him to leave? Of course you want him here, so you can have your reliable fuck every night!”
“Lindsay,” Brian took a deep breath. “I’m tired of having the same conversation with you all the time.”
“Brian, I’m,” Lindsay began, “I’m sorry. When you wouldn’t help Melanie and me to move to Canada we both got so angry at you.”
“Why would I want to help you take my son away?”
“You aren’t a full time dad Brian; just recently you started showing more interest in him. I thought you were punishing me for telling Justin he needs to go to NY.”
“I didn’t give you money to go to Canada because I don’t think that’s the answer!”
“Well, maybe you don’t know what’s best for Melanie and me.”
“I know moving to Canada is not best for Gus! Why would you want to move where you don’t know anyone and there’s no one to help if something happened? Would Melanie even be able to practice law in Canada? Huh? We both know the answer to that!”
“Okay okay!! You’re right! Is that what you want to hear?”
“No, I don’t need to hear that I am right! I need you to understand I love my son and I want to be a big part of his life! You need to know I regret signing my rights away!”
“Oh Mr. No Regrets?”
“Yes, I know Melanie should have some rights, but how will Gus feel when he’s old enough to know I gave him away?”
“But that was the agreement all along. You said you didn’t want to be a father.”
“That’s true, until I held him, until I saw him, until he became real.”
“Brian…I don’t know what to say.”
“Well, I want Gus to spend the night and I’ll take him to school in the morning, okay?”
“Um, you’re sure you’ll get him…” Lindsay stopped. “Yes Brian, Gus can stay tonight.”
“Thanks Linds.”
“I’ll talk to Mel about Gus spending more time with you and Justin. And I’ll stop talking about Justin going to New York. If he wants to stay in Pittsburgh, that’s his decision.”
“Thank you Lindsay. I’ll talk to you later.”
“Okay, I’d like to get together to make up a schedule for Gus.”
“Sounds good. Later.” As Brian hung up the phone Justin walked into the room.
“Everything okay?”
“Yeah. Can you believe she wants to get together with us and make a regular schedule for Gus? She’s going to let him spend more time with us and she’s going to stop with this New York idea for you.”
“That’s great!” Justin hugged Brian and as they kissed Gus ran into the room.
“Daddy! Justin! You’re missing the movie!” They laughed. “Come on!” Gus grabbed one of Brian’s and one of Justin’s hands and pulled them out of the room.
“Okay! Okay!” Brian laughed as they walked out of the room.
