New York was being pummeled by the biggest snowstorm of the season. The streets were covered in a thick layer of snow. The news was littered with stories of cars that spun out of control, people covered up from head-to-toe when they had to venture outside, and various airlines that were canceling flights every hour of every day.
Justin had hoped that Liberty Air wouldn’t be one of those airlines but when he read the list on the screen of flights cancelled, he became one of the many New Yorkers stranded in the city.
His phone rang two days before Christmas. “Hello?”
“Do I need to come dig you out?”
“What?” Justin wasn’t in the mood for Brian’s little jokes. Even though Brian doesn’t admit it, he wanted Justin home in Pittsburgh for all major holidays. Other people would probably think it was because Justin could associate with everyone better during major events but Justin knew better.
“The snow.”
“Yeah, no, I got that part. What am I going to do about it? I don’t control the weather and neither do you,” Justin made sure to remind him of that last part. Sometimes Brian forgot that he didn’t control the universe. “Look, why don’t I just change my flight when the weather clears up? It can’t keep going on like this forever.”
“And miss the look on my kid’s face when he opens his mountain of presents?” Gus was already there in Pittsburgh. Lindsay and Melanie decided to come a week early. They said that they just really miss Pittsburgh and want to spend more time with everyone but both Brian and Justin knew more. Lindsay called Jennifer the first day that they were back and she asked to see some homes for sale. After four years, they decided that Canada wasn’t the Holy Land after all.
Justin could also read between the lines of Brian’s comment and he smiled to himself when he realized just how much Brian missed him. They haven’t seen one another since Thanksgiving. Brian was supposed to come out a week later but work got in the way. “I miss you too. I am going to miss …” It hit Justin in that moment just how much he would miss if he didn’t make it back home for Christmas.
Justin would miss seeing Gus open all the presents that Brian bought for him. He would miss Melanie resisting the urge to reprimand Brian for all the gifts. He would miss the warmth of Debbie’s house on Christmas Eve. He would miss Jenny Rebecca’s face as she opened her gifts and Michael’s proud face when she liked the gift that he’d given her. He would miss making out with Brian after the party ended and everyone telling them to go get a room.
Without realizing it, Justin sniffled, and took in a deep breath.
Brian stayed silent those past couple of minutes but spoke when he heard that. “You’ll miss sucking my cock. I know.” When Justin laughed, Brian released the breath that he was involuntarily holding in.
Justin quickly wiped his eyes and cleared his throat. “I’ll change my flight,” he said, his tone firm and decisive. “Just make sure someone takes pictures.”
“I’m sure Theodore wouldn’t mind volunteering.”
“You’re going to boss him around in the office and now you’re going to boss him around in your spare time too?”
“First of all, I’ve never stopped bossing him around in my spare time. And finally, I remember someone saying once that he liked when I was bossy.”
“That was only when I was there to reap the benefits.”
“You will be soon,” Brian reminded him.
“I will be,” he agreed.
After a quick session of phone sex to relieve them both, Justin called the airline to change his flight for a couple of days later. The forecast predicted that the snow would at least begin to subside by then.
The next couple of days passed without any incident. The Christmas carols were playing in loud speakers all across the city. The roommate called to wish him a Merry Christmas. He couldn’t believe that he’d be spending Christmas alone. This was the first time that he was spending Christmas alone and he didn’t know what to do.
The storm was beginning to slow down on Christmas Eve but the forecast told him that this was just a temporary reprieve. It was just enough time for people to drive or walk across town to go where they need to go.
Justin already called Brian and he hadn’t answered. Brian sometimes turned off his phone when they went to Debbie’s house. No one would call on Christmas and Jenny Rebecca sometimes got a hold of it and played with all the buttons. Brian was the only person that he wanted to call. He already crushed his Mom’s holiday spirits with the news that he couldn’t come and he didn’t want to hear her crying on the phone again.
With a lack of things to do, Justin took a nap on the couch, and awoke an hour later to hear someone knocking on his door. It must be a neighbor or maybe they delivered the mail this late to the area.
Justin reluctantly stood up and walked to the door, opening it and was frozen in place when he saw who was on the other side.
“Brian,” he said with surprise. For some reason this felt like some really good dream and figured he was still asleep on the couch. “How … but …”
“I expected a little more enthusiasm,” Brian smirked and stepped inside.
Justin threw his arms around him and kissed him with the enthusiasm that was missing in his original greeting. “You’re really here,” he spoke against Brian’s lips.
“It’s a Christmas miracle,” Brian smiled down at him before they shared another kiss.
“Sunshine!” he heard from behind Brian. Justin pulled away when he heard the voice that echoed down the long hallway. “Get your bubble butt down here! You and Brian can fuck later!” Debbie’s voice rang out loud and clear and Justin chuckled, smiling widely.
“Oh yeah, I brought the troops.”
Justin couldn’t believe it. “How did you pull this off?” Brian just shrugged his shoulders and leaned in for another kiss, this one less frantic, and sweeter than before.
Then Brian pulled away and pressed his forehead to Justin’s, eyes closed as he spoke, “You weren’t going to be home for Christmas. So, I brought Christmas to you. I had everyone ready and we waited for a break in the weather to fly here. Pittsburgh’s only an hour away.”
Justin wrapped his arms around Brian, held him tightly, and could feel his eyes watering for the second time this week.
“I mean it you two!” Debbie’s voice bellowed once again and they both laughed this time.
“You’re the one who wanted this,” Brian pulled away to wrap his arm around Justin’s shoulders and led him out of the apartment.
“I did. I can’t think of anything that I want more.” They shared another kiss and Brian waited for Justin to lock the door to his apartment before they went downstairs to celebrate Christmas just the way Justin wanted. He wouldn’t have to miss anything this year after all.
