Brian had been hit before. He’d been spit on and cursed at and even kicked. But the one thing he’d never done was taken it lying down.
The minute that boot connected with his stomach his body stiffened with rage. He didn’t curl in, trying to protect himself. He took it like a man, ensuring that there would be bruises in the morning.
He got up, trying to launch himself at his attacker, barely hearing Emmett’s hissed, “It’s his Dad, stop it.”
What Justin said then, although incredibly stupid, was brave.
He held him tightly as his father walked away.

The look in Lindsey’s eyes as she looked back reminded Mel that they hadn’t come as far as she’d thought. Two years ago they never would have dreamed of a family. But tonight was like a slap in the face, a reminder that she wasn’t ‘the mother.’
It unnerved her so deeply that even when Brian showed up, even as she spoke and fell apart she just didn’t care enough.
The worst part of all was that pitying look in his eyes, that tone in his voice when he spoke to the doctors.
At least they agreed on one thing.

When Jennifer looked up and saw Justin she almost burst into tears. This whole ordeal had been ripping their family apart at its already fragile seams. It had only been a week but she felt like it had been years since she’d seen her son.
And he and Molly fell back into their typical banter so easily that she almost tried to imagine him coming back.
Things being the way they were. It broke her heart when he told her that couldn’t happen though she knew it already.
And it hurt even more than the first time he walked away.

The phone rang and Michael groaned before leaning over to pick it up. He was pretty sure he knew what was coming.
“What?”
“So, how does it feel to be an old man?”
Brian. Of course.
“Just for the record, you’ll be joining me in a few short months.”
“Yeah, says you.”
Michael rolled his eyes, “Anything else?”
“Has your dick disappeared? Ass getting soft?”
“Negative on both,” he replied, leaning back on the couch, “See you after work?”
“I guess I can try squeezing you in.”
“Nice to know you care.”
“Happy Birthday, Mikey,” Brian said before hanging up.
