I watched as Michael held JR, rocking her to sleep. He had that look on his face I recognized so well. The one that said he couldn’t believe she was part of him, that he had helped produce this beautiful child.
A surge of envy passed through my body, knowing this was something I would never feel.
Michael included me in every moment spent with JR and I was eternally grateful.
“Ben?”
I focused back on Michael.
“I wish we could have one of our own…that was part of both of us”
He knew how I felt. He always did. |

I looked in the mirror, noticing a new wrinkle by my eye. Some people call them laughter lines, I call them getting old. No gray in my hair though, my eyes still bright and shining as I turned my head this way and that.
Another year had passed, and if I tried I could forget for an instant that today was my 40th birthday. My days of being Peter Pan were long past but at least I wasn’t so old I couldn’t remember them.
“Brian are you nearly ready?” Justin’s voice interrupted my musings “Michael said 8pm for dinner”
