Show and Tell: Let's Talk About Tricks
We are first introduced to Brian Kinney as he drags a willing trick to the backroom at Babylon.

Up until then, I had always thought a trick was a cruel joke you played on non-friends, but I

quickly learned that "tricking" in the world of Queer as Folk was a whole 'nother animal.

We rarely learned the name of any of the guy's tricks because...well because they are supposed

to be "Just a fuck." Yet we all know Brian's Dr. Goodfuck, Zucchini Man, and Mr. 11:00.

And we have Emmett's Dungeonmaster, Michael's Brazilian Crab Boy, and my personal favorite,

Brian's Hotlanta.

Hotlanta was fairly attractive,(and some of Brian's tricks did tend to be on the fugly side)

had a sexy accent, was nice to Justin, and liked to cook! Yes, Brian invited him home to hurt

Justin, but that wasn't Hotlanta's fault.

Anyway, here is a short video of some of Brian's tricks. The vid I really wanted to use has had

the audio track removed by FU-Tube, so forgive the tacky song and brief Brian and Mikey moment.

So talk to me...any favorite tricks? And remember, you're not just limited to Brian. Everyone

seemed to like a piece of anonymous ass every once in a while.

Hm - interesting topic.

My first impulse is simply to say that I don't like any of the tricks - because I like Brian with Justin and vice-versa and end of story.

But now that the knee-jerk reaction is over ... um. Well, I did like Hotlanta - I thought he seemed sweet. I also kind of liked George Goodfuck - because he was concerned about Justin going off into the night by himself; I've even spent a little time wondering what Mr. Goodfuck does with his days when he's not responding to online booty calls from the likes of Brian. Minister, maybe? Social worker? Furniture-maker? The possibilities are limitless.

The only not-Brian's trick that comes to mind is the one Emmett met up with in ... what was the episode where they went into the online-world? 109. Use-my-hole 27 - both the online version and the RL version were cute and kind of funny.

Actually - the more I think of it, the more I realize that there are a lot of QAF scenes I like that involve tricks.

Hmm ... *walks away and thinks about it some more*

I know exactly what you mean and I agree...but...the tricks are all a part of the story. So, if you decide to acknowledge they were a part of the lifestyle the guys had and accepted as normal, especially Brian, the tricks make sense, and shouldn't be any more than what they are, "One time only fucks."

I love that storyline with Emmett and his online big brutal top alter ego. I also liked "Dijon" as in mustard.

Even Ted had some adventures in tricking; with the guy who he saw buying HIV meds in S1, the happy Pride fuck, and even Blake at first was introduced as a trick.

Zucchini Man was one of the first signs of discord in Brian and Justin's relationship in S2. The tricking contest they had in S4 when Dr. Trick found the lump on Brian's ball. The tricking both Brian and Justin did while Justin was in LA. Tricking happened and was accepted whether we liked the concept or not.

Think of how boring some of those plot lines would have been without tricks.

I get sad just thinking about all the tricks.

But, there was one I liked. Father Tom (Tom was his name, right?). He seemed nice and I think he really liked both Justin and Brian. I especially liked the look on his face when Brian says that he is going to hell and walks straight over to Justin on the dancefloor. He looks so happy that Brian has Justin to go to.

I'm so tired right now, I hope I made some kind of sense:)

I used to get sad about all the tricking too, until I just accepted it was part of a lifestyle I knew nothing about, and I should just go with the flow and enjoy the show-lol!

Was it Tim or Tom? I'm not sure. But he was an interesting example of someone who tricked, but because of his vocation could never hope to have what he saw in Brian & Justin.

I am not sad about the tricking. I don't try to edit it out or anything. I just don't enjoy watching it, and I find it almost impossible to write, most likely because other than Brian and Justin I just don't mind men sexy so I feel slightly distanced or something when I see it -- it's how I feel when I see heterosexual sex scenes in films. I certainly don't object to them or think they're wrong or invalid, I just don't feel any connection.

I'm sure that's why it's so incredibly hard for me to write scenes in which they're with other guys, even though I 100 percent recognize it was a vital part of their characterization and the story.

All that said, ohfreckle made this awesome icon once and I liked it so much I used it, even though it's Justin with another guy!

You know, I think I've mentioned tricking in a fic or two, but aside from the hustler in that so sad scene in S3, I've never written a tricking scene, and don't really want to either. Of course, I don't like to write about OC with either of them anyway.

But I also think most people feel distanced or removed from those scenes because there is such a lack of feeling between the participants.

That's a great icon BTW!

In the earlier seasons, Justin likes to experiment just as much as Brian does, so I don't think: "Poor Justin", because Brian is honest and Justin seems to have his share of the fun, too (well, it depends, of course, but I just wanted to say that he's not a victim of Brian's tricking). However, it does make me squirm when Brian uses the tricks to deny that Justin is special to him or to keep him off his back.

I liked Hotlanta, too. And Reverend Buttfuck was also very cute. Then the guy in the comic store, Season 1.

And I found the 511 scene with Ted in the baths very moving. The man wasn't very attractive at all, but that was the right trick at the right time.

	Really, up until he gets back from LA in S5, we see Justin tricking. It was all a part of his "gay education" via Brian, and we know he was an apt pupil. But, you are right, there are times when Brian uses tricking as a way to push him away. And I had forgotten about Ted in the baths in 511. Good point! (Reply to this) (Parent)

I tend to think of tricks mainly as pretty men hanging all over Brian and/or Justin, or else random men at Babylon available to whoever. But this encounter was different altogether. 	Xie's icon reminded me of the kid who picks Justin up at the museum. I liked him and liked that he showed Justin having sexual experience outside of Brian. I thought the young exec guy Brian picks up early S1 was kindo of cute too. (Reply to this) (Thread)

Isn't that who is in the icon?? I'm really bad at identifying people in icons unless they're the main characters.

I liked the same thing about that museum scene, especially with his mom waiting for him, having no idea what her baby boy was up to in the restroom.

Is that the ad exec in 102? I love how he tells Brian "I don't kiss" and Brian is totally like "Yeah right." Ironic that "No kissing" became one of the rules he followed for Justin later.

I'm currently rewatching Season 1; I almost forgot how much Brian tricks. It's constant! I'll break the trend here and admit that I generally like seeing him with other men in the first season, particularly when he's kissing them (probably not a popular view!). I'm thinking Hotlanta, and the waiter at the Senator's party. Even if the tricks aren't that attractive, Brian often justs looks beautiful, unashamedly sexual, predatory, into it... and I find all that hot.

That only really goes for Season 1 though (I've never been a believer in the inevitability of Brian and Justin from day one), after that I'd rather see Brian and Justin on screen together than with tricks, although I'm not at all bothered by the two of them continuing to do so. In fact, I like it when they get playful at the gym with Justin getting guys numbers and telling lies about Brian having crabs, and their little competition over bagging the doctor. Actually seeing the tricking though? Well, if it's all about them, like the 307 eyefuck, then that's fine, but if it's like the season five foursome, it just doesn't appeal to me.

	Yes to everything you said, especially your two examples from S1 and just the way Brian stalks his tricks in general during that season. 307 eyefuck is extremely erotic to me, one of my favorite scenes in the entire series. (Reply to this) (Parent)

Like you I had no idea what a Trick really was when I started watching QAF. Of course I quickly learned. I really had no problem seeing either Brian or Justin with others (well except for Ethan) because they really didn't mean anything as it pertained to Brian and Justin's non-relationship.

Now my favorite Brian tricks were George Goodfuck and Hotlanta.

My favorite non B/J trick was Emmett and the Howler when he was living with Mel and Lindsay. That totally cracked me up. Oh, and there was the guy he was in the cemetery with. Emmett was my favorite character other than Brian and Justin.

What do you guys think?

	Lol at the Howler, I totally forgot about him! And for some reason that reminds me about the guy who followed Michael home in 101 with the fake bulge and butt cheeks. No wonder the back room was always so crowded. You never knew what you might be bringing home otherwise. (Reply to this) (Parent)

Tricks of Brian's that I remember that I don't think have been mentioned:
- ad awards after-dinner trick
- catcher/pitcher (these shirts make me LOL everytime I watch that scene)
- pool boy
- sean (when "the cub captured the lion's prey" - I loved this line at the diner the next morning)
- ted's nurse
- the trick in Chicago

As someone else said, I like the tricking - when Brian isn't doing it to hurt himself or Justin, esp as it showed us Brian in a state of undress, if not naked, more often!!

	This is a great topic. Let me think... Ummmmmm, I love the parade of tricks in 110, when the cops are asking Brian about visitors (and the throwback to the Brian/Justin snark from earlier that day about George Washington being the only one who hasn't slept there. bwhahahhahha). I also find Em's LOVE in 120, hysterical and oh so campy. Love this show! (Reply to this)

	I generally don't like Brian's tricks, but Hotlanta, Reverend Buttfuck, Catcher&Pitcher (LAWL), George Goodfuck and the waiter in 117 were good. I loooove how Brian drags off the waiter! YUMMY. And Justin's trick in 106 (?) is nice - that surfer type of guy that he meets at the art gallery. (Reply to this)
