After Ted and Emmett break up at the end of season 3, they gradually return to being best friends during seasons 4 and 5. However, they never return to being lovers. I tend to attribute their breakup to Ted's individual mental breakdown, but that leaves me wondering why Emmett would take him back as a friend, but not as lover, once Ted gets his act together.
