Who: Lilith, Adam, and a bit of God
From: Before UtR
By: Krys
Prompt: Determination
Note: I take Jack's ideas and run with them. I am a dirty thought-thief. Maybe there will be more later. Maybe not.
Before her ejection from the Garden, Lilith was a kinder, infinitely more patient being than the one she'd later become. Proof of this could be seen in her day to day dealings with Adam.
"It's a penis-lizard!" Adam announced, seeming quite pleased with this title.
Lilith wasn't quite so sure. She raised a brow and then glanced down at what would become the snake, trying to apologize to him with her eyes. In a gentle tone, she spoke to Adam, "Are you really sure about that? I mean..." Lilith thought for a moment, "he's on his stomach and he slithers and maybe his name should have a different sound. Something that's fitting..." a name was on the tip of her tongue.
"No. Penis-lizard fits fine," Adam said, grinning.
Lilith knew that look in Adam's eye. It meant that there was no arguing. Or, if there was to be arguing, God would be called in to referee. And Lilith knew that God loved Adam best. She was still too young to be properly jealous, but this never sat quite right with her.
In an effort to meet Adam half-way (the whole way, actually - and it seemed more and more that Lilith was having to give in to every whim of Adam) she let it slide. She'd call the penis-lizard "liz" for short. Later on, just to be fair, she'd be sure to find something pretty - a flower, maybe - and call it a vagina-somethingorother.
And so it went on for a time - how long, exactly, Lilith couldn't be sure - that the married pair lived together in relative harmony. But the longer Lilith stayed with Adam, the more she saw him for what he truly was. Secretly, Lilith thought herself the better being. Out loud, she constantly reminded Adam that they were equals. Just because he'd come into being first didn't give him the right to rule over her.
Lilith could feel something unpleasant growing inside her as time passed. She was discontent with Adam, who was usually well-meaning but always stupid. The sex they had rarely, if ever, pleased her. When she tried to suggest spicing things up, Adam got nasty. Lilith couldn't understand what his problem was with being on the bottom. If she had to suffer him thrusting and grunting on top of her it only seemed fair that he do the same from time to time.
After a particularly dull and quick roll through the grass, Lilith pulled away from her husband and sat up. She glanced at the setting sun and then at the birds (creatures that Adam insisted be called "wing-dealies") that flew beyond Eden's borders. She almost felt jealous.
"Adam?"
He rolled over. Lilith considered herself lucky she'd caught him before he'd dozed off. "Wha?"
"I want to try sex again."
"Okay." He grinned. "Just give me a few minutes." He glanced down at his limp penis. Lilith thought that there might have been a design flaw when it came to man. She didn't need time to warm back up like he did. But saying this aloud was sinful. And Lilith loved God enough that she didn't want to point His mistakes out to Him.
"I want to try different positions. I want to be..." she hesitated, feeling a little thrill of excitement run down her spine at the thought, "on top." Quickly she added, "Just once."
Adam sighed. "This again? I told you, Lilith, we're not going to do that. It's not right. Woman isn't meant to do that."
Lilith raised a brow. There was more than a little attitude in her voice. "Says who? I don't remember God saying that."
"I said so." There was a pause. When Adam spoke again, his tone was almost shy. "It makes me uncomfortable."
"I do all these things for you and you don't ever do the things I ask. It's... it's..." Lilith could feel a new word coming, "selfish."
Adam sat up beside her, brow furrowed. He hated when she made new words like that. He'd always have to stop the conversation and ask her for definitions. From her tone, he knew that "selfish" wasn't a good thing. " I do plenty for you!"
"Yeah? Like what?"
There was a long pause.
"Exactly," Lilith said. "I want to have sex my way. Just once." There was a steely sound in her voice, as though she wasn't going to budge until she got to at least try what she'd always wanted to try.
"No."
She crossed her arms over her chest. "Maybe we don't have to have sex again, then."
Adam paled at that thought. He stumbled over some words before finally shouting, "God!"
Lilith felt her anger rise. She stood, placed her hands on her hips and glared down at Adam. "You always have to bring Him into this. And He always is on your side. This isn't fair!"
Just then the clouds parted and a voice that was large enough to cause every being, every tree, every blade of grass in Eden to tremble spoke, "What is it this time?"
"Lord," Adam was standing now, too, staring up at the sky. "Lilith won't stop arguing about sex. She says she won't have sex again if I don't do it her way!" He sounded like a petulant child. Lilith hadn't ever heard a petulant child before, but she was sure one would sound like this.
"Lilith?" God liked to hear both sides of the story before ruling in Adam's favor.
For a moment, Lilith just thought. She could see her future here in the garden and it would be perfect; she'd live in a beautiful place with her animal friends, she'd talk with the angels that bothered to interact with she and Adam, she'd always be safe and comfortable. She would always have everything she ever needed. But she didn't think she'd be content like she had been at the beginning. Lilith had an epiphany. "This isn't ever going to change, is it?"
Both God and Adam were silent.
"He," she pointed at Adam, "got made first. And I was an afterthought. So no matter how long I stay here, I'm going to be loved but not loved as much. So Adam's always going to get his way and I'm just going to have to deal with that. Right?"
Adam looked at her stupidly. God still said nothing.
"This isn't working."
"Huh?" Adam had found his voice again.
"This isn't working," Lilith repeated, sounding more sure of herself. "I love you, but you're dumb. I love God, but..." she stopped suddenly. For the first time, she felt sadness. "I'm leaving."
"What?" Adam sounded horrified. "No!"
Lilith waited for some word from God, but nothing came. She grew angry that He wasn't even trying to make her stay. Did she mean that little to Him? "No? You can't tell me what to do, Adam. We've been over this. We're equals. I never command you and you can't command me to do anything."
"But.. wait... where will you go?" He was speaking quickly, now. There was desperation and anger and more than a little bit of pleading in his voice. "You can't go! Lilith!" His tone grew sharper. "You'll be back! And maybe then you'll have changed that attitude!"
Truthfully, Lilith had no idea where she was going. She'd figure it out as she went along. She walked, not even sure where the nearest exit was. She figured if she kept going in one direction, she'd eventually be out of this place.
"Lilith!" Adam called after her. "Wait! We can try you being on top. Just once."
Lilith rolled her eyes. There was a new sway to her step that hadn't been there before. Her voice was low enough that Adam wouldn't be able to hear, "Fuck that shit." And so it was that swear words came into being.
