Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Kate and Nic
Where: Local coffee house just a few blocks from Brown Campus
When: Sunday, early afternoon

Kate had been living like a hermit ever since school started, and she wasn’t enjoying it but she really didn’t have a choice. Kate didn’t want to fall behind with all of the stuff she had to do so soon in the school year, and she knew that if she got everything done right away then she would have more time to work on her special projects and portfolios that she had to do pretty soon. This meant that Kate had to spend all of Friday and Saturday doing homework and reading until she felt like her head was going to explode. The hard work was worth it because Kate got a few things done early and now had her Sunday all to herself before having to go back to classes on Monday. Kate slept in a bit, but not too late so that she would still be able to go to bed early, and then decided that she could meet up with Nicole the model that she was going to be working with. Kate wasn’t sure if she was going to have another chance to sit down with the girl before they had to start working on her project, so she thought it would be best to get it done while she could.

After calling Nicole and arranging to meet up at Kate’s favourite coffee shop, she told the girl what she would be wearing and what she looked like so that there would be no confusion, Kate quickly got ready and dressed. She made sure not to change her mind on what she was going to be wearing since she already told Nicole before and grabbed a quick bite to eat. Kate didn’t bring a bag or anything since she was just meeting for coffee and shoved her cell phone and wallet in her pockets before heading out the door.

The coffee shop was close to residence, so it didn’t take Kate that long to get there. It wasn’t that busy inside, but Kate sat down at a table close to the doors and waited for Nicole to arrive. She casually looked around the place to make sure that the girl had not arrived first, but it was full of mostly guys and the only girl that were there was definitely not a model so Kate was pretty sure that she was good. Kate also made sure that she sat facing the door so she could watch people coming in, and so that Nicole could spot her easily when she came in.

The weekends that Nic spent outside of the salon were always her favorite. The stylist didn't hate her job, not by a long shot, it was just that some time spent away from the crazy clientele of the salon and the hair products, some of which smelled terrible, was always nice. It gave Nic some time to breathe and actually do things for herself. Like take an actual trip to the grocery store and buy some real food instead of the 'broke' food she'd been surviving off of for the last week. Or clean. Nic's apartment wasn't dirty, not really, but it wasn't spotless like she normally kept it. She was a bit OCD when it came to keeping her living space immaculate and the dirt that had been tracked in earlier that week was finally starting to get on her last nerve and she mopped her entire kitchen Saturday afternoon. Cleaning was a form of therapy for Nic and oddly enough, she always found herself extremely relaxed afterwards. And after doing her laundry and rearranging her closet, the blonde fell into a blissful sleep.

She felt well rested when she heard her cell phone going off across the room and stumbled out of her bed to reach it before it went to voice mail. Nic had gotten good at masking the sleep in her voice after years of practice and sounded cheery when she answered. She was happily surprised to hear it was Kathleen calling up to arrange their meeting over coffee. Nic took note of what the girl on the other end of the phone said, jotting down what she looked like, where they were meeting, and the time before hanging up the phone. After a quick shower and a brief discussion with herself about what she wanted to wear and then getting dressed, Nic was just about ready to go. She swiped on just a bit of make-up, not wanting to look like a slob or anything first meeting Kathleen, and was going to do something with her hair when she glanced at the clock. Seeing the time, and calculating just how long she needed to get to the coffee shop, she opted to let her hair air dry. Slipping her feet into a pair of sneakers, she grabbed her phone and purse and then left, locking her apartment up behind her before she went on her merry way.

For once traffic hadn't been a complete pain in her side and she managed to find a relatively decent spot when she parked her car. Ruffling a hand back through her semi-dry hair, Nic entered the coffee shop. The line at the front wasn't that long, and she was a tad bit early, so Nic made a bee-line for the register. She knew exactly what she wanted and immediately spit it out when the barista asked for it. Paying for it, Nic stepped to the side as she waited for it, turning around and leaning against the bar, blue eyes scanning the place. They immediately fell onto a girl that fit Kathleen's description of herself to a tee and when Nic got her drink, she moved over to that table.

Holding her drink in one hand, Nic shot the pretty brunette a bright smile, ready to extend her hand if the girl was indeed who she was supposed to meet. "Are you Kathleen?" she asked, pretty sure that she was Kathleen, but wanting to make sure before she sat down with the girl.

Kate didn’t even notice the blonde walk into the coffee shop even though she was facing the door. She had started to day dream and had her head down as she started picking at her nails, a really bad habit she had picked up over the past year. She ran a hand through her hair, which was now cut shorter then it usually was, and looked up just in time to see a blonde girl smiling at her. She returned the smile and knew that he was Nicole right away. “Yes, I am guessing you are Nicole?” Kate said, standing up and offering her hand. Nicole looked like a model, she was gorgeous and at least two inches taller then Kate and since Kate was tall for a girl that was pretty impressive. “Nice to meet you,” Kate added still with a smile on her face after the two of them finished shaking hands. Kate had to admit that she was a little bit nervous meeting Nicole. She wasn’t the greatest person at meeting new people at times, and having it being over a professional setting made things more awkward for Kate.

After sitting down and running another hand through her hair Kate looked at Nicole and then down at the coffee in her hands. Kate had not grabbed a coffee of her own and now wanted to smack herself for not getting one while she waited for Nicole. Kate glanced at the line up, glad that it still wasn’t long and then looked at Nicole again. “I guess I should get myself a coffee,” Kate said with a laugh. “|I will be right back.” Kate then got up from her seat and walked over to the line. It only took a moment for Kate to get to the front of it and she ordered her usual coffee, shoving her hand in her pocket to grab her walled that was squeezed in there. Once she was paid and done Kate walked back to the table with her coffee and sat down, waiting a few moments for it to cool before she took a sip. If you had seen Kate a few years ago you would never of seen her with coffee, but having to be up early for school and the work load that she got made Kate get into the habit of needing some caffeine in the morning so that she was able to function.

Once she was sat down again and settled Kate looked over at Nicole and suddenly wasn’t sure what to say. “So, you will be working with me for the next few weeks. . . I just thought it would be nice to meet up before hand so that we could get to know each other,” Kate said with a smile. “Um, so I am twenty years old and in my second year at Brown. I am taking visual arts and photography, obviously, and…I don’t really know what else to say.” Kate was never the greatest at talking about herself, she didn’t think she was that interesting of a person and never knew what to say. “So, do you model full time?” Kate asked, deciding to switch the conversation to Nicole.

Nic let out a small puff of air when she confirmed her assumptions and nodded, readily shaking Kathleen's hand. "I am, and it's nice to meet you, too." Nic was impressed by the girl's height, not that Kathleen could have done anything about it, but it was nice to meet someone of the same sex that she didn't tower over. That kind of thing got terribly old fast. Nic pulled the seat out opposite the brunette when they were done with their handshake and sat down, moving her purse to her lap as she sat her drink down on the table after taking a quick sip of it. The blonde wasn't sure whether she should start a conversation or not, and was a little relieved when she said she was going to grab herself a coffee. Nic nodded with the same bright smile, "sure. I'll be here." When Kathleen left the table, Nic looked down and then rummaged through her purse, seeking out her chap stick. She found it lodged somewhere in the bottom and quickly swiped it across her lips, smacking them lightly afterward, before she tossed it in her bag and zipped it closed.

Nic lifted the drink to her mouth as her new friend returned with her drink and as soon as the drink was down, her smile returned. She liked to smile, it happened. She nodded in agreement when Kathleen mentioned getting to know each other would be nice beforehand. "I'm glad you got in touch with me, since my agent couldn't give me any of your information," she said with a small wave of her hand. Her agent hadn't known who she was working with at the time. Nic nodded as the other spoke, her smile brightening just a little when she said she didn't know what else to say. Nic found that type of quality humbling, some photographers she'd spent time with would yack your ear off about nothing but themselves. True some models were like that, but Nic liked to think she wasn't. "Me? Oh no. I only just started a few months ago. And I really only dabble," she answered with a small flick of her wrist. Nic also tended to talk with her hands sometimes. "I actually style hair for a living at a salon over at the mall." At least that meant she could do her own hair and make up for whatever shoot it was that Kathleen needed her for, right? Right.

Kate nodded to Nicole and took a small sip of her coffee, but it was still too hot and she nearly burnt her tongue in the process. Her jerked the cup away from her mouth quickly and placed it back down on the table hoping it wasn’t too obvious of what she did. Good, so Nicole wasn’t into modeling a lot so there still was a chance that she would have the attitude that most models, well what Kate assumed, most models had. Kate was still somewhat judgemental towards people, it was a trait that she had worked to grow out of but had not successfully done yet. “Oh that is cool. I might be able to use your hair talents later if I need to. I have not decided on a theme yet, but I am sure hair and make up will need to be done, and those are two areas that I am not an expert in at all.” Kate said, referring to her plain hair and face with no make up on. Kate had never bothered to get involved with that kind of stuff, she knew how to do her basic hair and make up and that was about it. Kate really didn’t have time for anything else.

“So, are you originally from Providence?” Kate then decided to ask, it was a question that had become a habit to ask with anyone knew that Kate met. Most people that she got to know in school had all moved here from a different state, or even country, so people were constantly asking each other where everyone was from or how long they have lived in Providence. Kate had been in Providence for about a year, so she was really starting to get used to the city and even calling it her home while she was at school. Kate then eyed her coffee cup again and decided that it was safe to try and take another drink. She lifted the cup slowly to her lips and took another small sip, this time it not being too hot or hurting. She then placed the glass down and ran a hand through her hair, casually eyeing some of the other people in the coffee shop before returning her attention to the blonde sitting in front of her.

Nic noticed the way Kathleen moved the cup from her face, but decided not to mention it. She wouldn't want anyone to call her out on her doing such a thing, so she wouldn't call the brunette out on it. It just wasn't that nice of a thing to do, anyways. Nic's eyes lit up just a bit when Kathleen said she might use her talents and the blonde nodded enthusiastically. "Oh I totally don't mind it." Nic reached for her drink and took a somewhat healthy sip, the liquid not seething hot like it had been minutes before. It wasn't that she was still tired, no she'd gotten plenty of sleep the night before, she just wasn't up to her peppy self yet. The caffeine helped her reach that happy, peppy plateau.

Honestly, Nic thought Kathleen was quite pretty just the way she was. Her hair was shiny and fell in such gorgeous waves, and was a unique shade of brown, almost like it had a tint of red over it. It was really pretty. And her eyes. Her eyes were the loveliest shade of green Nic had ever see. And that was including Andy's eyes, which had been an outstanding shade of green. Kathleen's were just prettier.

Nic blinked when the other girl spoke, breaking her of her thoughts, and it took her just a second to process what she had asked. "Yep. Born and raised. I left for about a year and a half and moved to D.C. for school, but other than that, I've been here my entire life," she answered with a small chuckle. It didn't bother Nic in the least that she wasn't well traveled or anything. Maybe that made her a bit of a stick in the mud, but whatever. "What about you?" A lot of people came to Providence to attend school at Brown and Kathleen could have been like that as well, Nic didn't know. It always intrigued Nic to hear about where people came from and what they did before making it to Providence. And if Kathleen had some kind of interesting story, then she definitely wanted to hear it.

Kate didn’t even notice the fact that Nicole wasn’t well travelled, and if she did she wouldn’t of judged her for it. The most traveling that Kate had done in her life were in the past two years, other then that she lived in her home town all of her life. “Born and raised in Boulder Colorado,” Kate said. “I lived there my whole life and then took a year off after high school to work in Mexico with my Dad for about a year before I came here for school.” Kate had taken a year off before going to university and she was glad that she did it. “It was a good that I did take a year off because I had not idea what I wanted to take right after high school. I didn’t even know I would like photography so much until just recently.” There were a lot of reasons why Kate had decided to get more into photography, but she didn’t want to talk about the main reason and the person who introduced her to it.

Knowing that the coffee was now at a lower temperature Kate picked up her cup again and took a large sip from it. She had gotten a decent amount of sleep last night, but Kate was now in the habit where she was never fully awake in the morning unless she had some caffeine in her. It was a terrible habit, and something that Kate hadn’t started doing until she started going to school at Brown. University and student life put a lot of strain on your body, that was for sure. “Maybe it is because most of the people I meet are from the University, but it seems like it is hard to find someone who was born and raised here,” Kate mentioned after she put her cup down again. “I have met people from tons of different states and even different countries, it is kind of cool.”

Nic listened as Kathleen answered her and she nodded. She wanted to ask her if the skiing out there was really that great, but decided against it. It wasn't like she was going to take a trip out to Colorado just to ski, though she did know some people who had before, Nic just wasn't that type of person. "Mexico?" Nic repeated, "that sounds like fun." Nic leaned her arms against the edge of the table and bent her arms back so her chin could rest on the backs of her hands. Nic's smile softened just a little when she brought up her interest in photography and she could only assume she had found her knack for it in Mexico. It had to be a gorgeous enough place to photograph, right? "I bet you'd get on with my boyfriend. He's a photographer, too. You two could swap stories and stuff," she offered, thinking it would be nice if Jason had someone around to discuss his craft with. Nic tried, she really did, but she couldn't wrap her head around all of the technicalities that came with being behind the camera. That and she knew if she introduced the two, Jason wouldn't cheat on her. He just wasn't that type of guy.

"I assure you we do exist," she said with a small grin. Most of the kids Nic went to school with were all from Providence. It wasn't until she got older that more and more people she met were from elsewhere. Not that that was a bad thing, it was just what she noticed. People from other places were cool, though, especially the ones that came with accents. "Oh I bet so." Nic didn't know much about Brown University, but she knew that it was an Ivy League school that housed many different types of students. "So do you do anything outside of school? Or are you just focused on getting your education before settling down with a job?" Nic respected her either way. She was going to Brown, who wouldn't respect her?

Kate nodded her head in agreement with Nicole. “Yeah, it was a lot of fun. Totally worth the time off.” Kate couldn’t help but admit to herself that her year in Mexico was probably one of the most fun years of her life so far. She had met so many different people, including Jason, and got to know her father a bit better. They were on good terms again and Kate called him as much as she called her mother to talk and catch up while she was at school. Kate then tilted her head and smiled a bit when Nicole mentioned that her boyfriend was a photographer and she couldn’t help but think of Jason. Talking about him had gotten easier for Kate since they broke up, it had been nine months now since she had to make that call, but she still had to prepare herself a bit whenever she did decide to mention him. “Oh really? Sounds like fun, though I am pretty new to this stuff still so I don’t know how many good stories I will have.” After taking another sip from her cup and casually clearing her throat a bit Kate spoke again, “My ex boyfriend is a photographer, a really good one too. Though, I have not talked to him in a while.” Kate couldn’t help but feel a little bit of a sting when she said that. A few weeks ago Kate got the courage to call Jason again, but only to find out that the number had been disconnected. He had moved, or changed his number and not told her which lead Kate to believe that he had moved on, something that took Kate a long time to do.

“Right now I am just focusing on school, but I have a feeling I am going to be needing a part time job here pretty soon.” Kate said, not looking forward to looking for a job and working while she was swimming in homework. Kate had gotten a few scholarships back in Colorado which paid for most of her tuition, but she still had student loans to pay for her housing and living expenses and the money she had saved up from working in Mexico and during the summer holidays was starting to run out. Kate had plans to buy a car and had enough money to cover it and most of her insurance, but she needed to extra cash coming in to pay for gas and anything else extra that she wanted. Kate didn’t like the idea of taking out a bigger student loan or putting too much on her credit card, she didn’t want to be in that big of debt when she graduated school. “I know a lot of people do it, but it is really hard to work and go to school at the same time.”

Nic nodded in agreement. If she had had the time to take a year off from anything, working out of the country would have been the way to go. But she went straight to beauty school after graduating. And while most of the time she spent in D.C. had been beyond spectacular, the last few months were a space of time that she'd rather forget. But that was neither here nor there. What was here was their discussion of Jason and Kathleen meeting him. She waved a hand in the air before grabbing her cup and taking a sip of the now luke-warm drink. "I'm sure he wouldn't care. He'd just be happy to talk to someone about it. He's tried with me," Nic admitted, placing one hand against her chest, "but I just can't wrap my head around it. Give me a point and click camera and I'm fine...but he has this monster camera that I'm scared of picking up for fear of dropping it." Jason would never forgive her if she dropped his Nikon camera. No doubt about it, their relationship would be over and done with. She frowned a little when Kathleen mentioned her ex and she tilted her head somewhat. "Aw. Didn't end on good terms?" After a moment, Nic held her hands up and shook her head. "I'm sorry, that was quite nosy of me. You really don't have to answer that."

Again, Nic nodded. "I don't blame you for focusing on school. Education's important." Did she really sound as old to Kathleen as she did to herself? In her own head she sounded like someone's parent, or grandparent, but hopefully that was just her. Nic didn't want to sound too much older than her actual age of twenty-two. It would definitely bum her out. "If you need any help in finding a part time job somewhere, I'll be glad to help." Sure, she'd just met the woman, but she seemed nice enough. "I know a few people here and there," she added with a small shrug and a smile.

Her stomach let out a low grumble and Nic immediately put her hand over it, her eyes a little wide in embarrassment. "I haven't eaten yet today," she chuckled before motioning back to the front, "do you mind if I go grab a muffin or something?" Nic lifted her purse to the table and sat it to the side, snatching her wallet out. "Do you want anything?" she offered as she rose from her chair. Couldn't hurt to ask, now could it?

The more Nicole talked about her boyfriend the more Kate thought about Jason, which she thought was pretty natural because anything to do with photography really did remind Kate of him. She also had not thought or talked about Jason in a while, and it was like she just needed to revisit the past with him for a bit, even if it was with someone who was practically a perfect stranger. She then nodded her head, understanding that not everyone was interested in photography right away. “My ex wouldn’t stop talking about photography once you got him started, so be glad you are not dating him,” Kate joked, smiling at the girl. Kate was getting that way as well, once you got her started on a subject that she was interested in, which was mostly photography and music right now, and she could go on about it for ages. A serious expression came over Kate’s face when Nicole asked if things ended on good terms with Jason, but she quickly replaced it with a reassuring smile. “No, it is all right,” Kate said, putting up her hand. It had been nine months since Kate had broken up with Jason and she thought she might as well get used to talking about it now. “I am not sure exactly how it ended. We were together for about a year and then I moved here for school and we tried long distance, but it was just too hard. I ended things, and we lost touch after that.” Kate then shrugged her shoulders and gave Nicole another smile, clearing her throat again. Talking about Jason turned out to be harder then she thought, but she did her best not to let it show. “But that was a while ago, I am dating someone else now and I am sure he is off doing the same somewhere.”

“It is, especially when it costs so much.“ Kate said with a grin. Her tuition fees were a bit ridiculous so Kate didn’t want to waste all of that money by flunking out of school. When it came to looking for a part time job Kate was not sure exactly where she wanted to work. Her options were limited since she only wanted a few hours, so she really could use any help that she could get. “Thanks,” Kate said, surprised at how willing Nicole was to help Kate out considering they had just met. She was starting to like the girl already. “I thought I would start looking once I get school a bit more under control.” Kate still had tons of homework she needed to sort through and get used to her new class schedule.

Kate looked at Nicole and smiled when she put her hand on her stomach. Kate was a little surprised that her own stomach had not started growling yet, she had only a little bit to eat before she headed over here but her coffee must of filled her up for now. “Go ahead,” Kate said, watching as Nicole rose from her chair. “no thank you, I had something before I came here.” Kate then added.

"Jay's the same way!" Nic squeaked with a small laugh, clapping her hands over her mouth for a minute. She realized she should've corrected herself moments after she spouted out Jay knowing that Jason would've scolded her if he knew she called him that, but what he didn't know wouldn't hurt him. "I get that way about hair," she then admitted with a sheepish grin. But she wouldn't bore Kathleen with those types of details.

Nic suddenly felt awful about asking about her ex-boyfriend, the look that crossed the brunette's face enough for Nic to apologize for asking, but Kathleen went on anyway. She readjusted in her seat just a bit, leaning forward slightly as she listened to what Kathleen had to say. Her expression softened, and while her situation wasn't like Nic's had been two years ago, it was a tad bit similar. Just a little. "I'm sorry to hear that." Nic understood what it was like to lose touch with someone that you'd been involved with for a long time. It sucked. Nic smiled a little as Kathleen continued and she nodded, "well that's good to hear. The past is the past for a reason, right?" That's what Nic liked to tell her anyway.

"Eeew, yeah, I bet so." Cosmetology school hadn't been cheap, but she was sure it wasn't anywhere near as expensive as attending Brown University. That place probably cost an arm and a leg or something extreme. Nic waved her hand as if to say no biggie when Kathleen thanked her. "No problem," she smiled, "just let me know when you're ready to start hunting and such." She probably had more connections in the city than Kathleen, and it was just in her nature to be nice and help people. Nic had always been like that.

Nodding after she gave her the go ahead, Nic moved to the bar and snatched a muffin off of a rack and then paid for it before retaking her seat across from Kathleen. She stuffed her wallet back into her purse and pulled it back to her lap before she began unwrapping her banana nut muffin. She picked off a piece and ate it, taking a sip of her drink afterward. "So have you given any thought as to what you wanted to do with your shoot?"

Kate nodded her head and made a mental note that Nicole’s boyfriend’s name was Jay, probably short for something else, for if she ever did get the chance to meet him. Kate was never the greatest with names and remembering them and always felt a little bit like an asshole when she was constantly forgetting the name of someone she just met or that someone else was talking about a lot. Kate then offered Nicole another smile, “I guess it is just a photography thing.”

It was really hard on Kate that she had lost touch completely with Jason. She was so used to being able to talk to him whenever she wanted about anything, even if they were not together, that it took a really long time to get used to not having him in her life anymore. They had known each other for a bit over a year before it ended, which to some people wasn’t that long of a time, but he had become one of her best friends and someone extremely important to her in that amount of time. It had been almost another year since they broke up and Kate still found herself missing him, especially when something silly like Tetris or Family Guy was brought up. Nicole was right, the past was the past and there really wasn’t anything that Kate could do about it now except for move on. At least the two of them had not ended on such bad terms that they hated each other now. “Yeah, my boyfriend is going to Brown as well so he understands my schedule is like the best.” Kate mentioned. It was Jamie’s last year so he was probably going to be working his ass off for the next few months.

Kate waited patiently at the table for Nicole as she went and bought herself a muffin. She thought about Nicole’s question for a second, knowing that she still really had no idea what she wanted to do yet. “I have had a few idea’s floating around.” Kate said with a nod. “I will need to pick a location first, I think, and then go from there. I don’t really have time to make or add anything to it, so one day I am just going to drive around, if I end up buying a car, and picking a place to shoot at. There are just so many possibilities I think my problem is going to be picking one. Is there anything that you are not comfortable modeling?” Kate asked, obviously knowing that she wouldn’t be doing any nudity since it would be on location. Though, Kate did play with the idea of having a pin up girl theme, but she wasn’t sure if Nicole’s face would be able to pull it off, she would have to see.
