Author Notes: I really hope this lives up to the prompt. In some form I don't feel it is but either way I couldn't stop my muse from writing this. xD She wouldn't stop writing until it came to the end.
She stood rooted to the spot unable to get her feet to move out of the path of the deadly blue lightning Azula had unleashed from the tips of her fingers. Move!, her brain tried to signal to every single nerve ending within her body but the nerves were not listening and the blue lightning was growing ever closer to her.
Katara's blue eyes widened in fear and her body stiffened preparing for the onslaught it now knew was coming. She had tuned out everything around her - sight and sound - that she didn't hear Zuko's alarmed cry nor see him move in the path of the lightning, taking the hit straight to the chest.
It wasn't until the lightning had been directed skyward that she finally snapped herself out of her stupor to take notice that Zuko laid upon the floor. Shards of lightning caressed his curled form.
"Zuko!" She cried out then propelling her body forward as water slipped over her gloved hand ready to heal him but she was halted once more in her steps by the flash of blue lightning. Her blue eyes lifted upward to where a crazed-looking Azula now stood upon one of the roofed buildings.
Drawing back the water into her water bottle skin, she knew she would have to find a way now to defeat Azula without Zuko's help or letting Azula back towards her brother while he was hurt.
Katara ducked behind a column just another blast of blue fire nearly singed her. Her mind racing with ways of trying to bring down Zuko's sister as her eyes scanned the scene frantically for water.
Another wave of blue lightning drew Katara from her thoughts and she pushed herself forward towards another orange column.
"Zuzu, you're not looking so good," Azula's voice rang out over the courtyard accompanied by a sinister-sounding laugh.
Katara caught sight of the water fountain and raised her hand to remove the water from the fountain, around her, and towards where Azula had been standing upon the roofed building.
Damn, she thought trying to scan the courtyard for signs of Azula. It wasn't until she heard the sound of fire propelling a body forward did she dare look behind to her to find the Fire Princess heading directly towards her.
Katara used the water she still held control over to surf her way across the courtyard, making sure to avoid Zuko's still proned body. As she entered underneath a roofed walkway, she caught sight of a vented water system but she would need something to hold -
Chains, she registered in her head as she reached out to grab them from the hook.
"..filthy peasant," Azula spat as she came from behind a column and stalked towards Katara. Her gold eyes filled with hate for the young woman whom had accompanied her brother. This was suppose to be her day of glory but no, her brother and this water tribe peasant had come to ruin it all for her. She had every intentions of killing them both and once they were dead, she could be crowned as she should have been earlier.
Azula prepared another lightning bolt and was prepared to send it forth when the water sprang upward around them, freezing both she and Katara in their place. It had taken the Fire Princess by surprise and she could not move a single limb of her body to thaw her out of the ice.
Katara let out a warm breath from her nose causing the water around her to liquefy around her and giving her free movement to move within the ice. She reached for Azula's outstretched arm and pulled it backwards with the other and tied them together before dragging her downward to tie her to the steel vent system.
Satisfied with her work, Katara raised her arms and lowered them causing the water to disappear back back downward.
Katara took a moment to breath. She could still feel the blood rushing through her body and her heart pounding wildly against her chest. She had never been so terrified in her life as she had been in those few seconds with Azula. She honestly believed the Fire Princess would have had no qualms of killing either she or even Zuko. They were nothing more than annoyances that kept her from the throne but now Azula could do no harm further to them.
So why was she still terrified?
Tearing her gaze away from the defeated princess, Katara moved quickly to Zuko's side. Her first concern was healing him and getting him better. Falling down to her knees, she turned him around and used the water in her water skin to heal the red angry wound on his chest. Tears were stinging her eyes as she did her best to heal the young prince.
"Thank you, Katara," he whispered huskily. His breathing still pained.
"I should be the one thanking you," she returned trying to keep herself from sobbing but nearly failing in her quest. She had been so scared for him...worried that Azula had done her worse to him and he would not have survived when she had gotten to him finally.
The very thought was not something she had wanted to consider in the least. Surely he would be fine now right? Katara wouldn't be sure. Certainly she would have to do a few more healing sessions with him once everyone was settled with Azula and Ozai put away.
But for now Katara would stand here at Zuko's side, pushing away the fear that had built itself up around her heart and looking towards the future that awaited them.
