The sun was shining and all was well in the city of Los Angeles as people went about their lives. Some were gearing up for weekend barbecues, others planning trips to the beach. Parents were out getting school supplies after work and kids were enjoying the last days of summer before the new school year started. It being LA meant there was also the usual grind of would-be actors and actresses making their rounds, and a film premiere or two going on. All in all, it was just a normal day with nothing out of the ordinary.
Normal meant a little something different to the young man sitting on the bench in the park, seeming to be relaxing. However, underneath the military jacket that was a size too big on his frame there was a tension in his shoulders that never quite left when he was out in public, and his eyes kept up a constant, if semi-casual, surveillance of his surroundings. Normal would mean something different to anyone who learned at a young age that machines from the future would stop at nothing to kill them because of who they became in that future.
John Connor had returned to Los Angeles -- albeit not his Los Angeles -- so he could acclimate himself to the current year. He wasn't thrilled with what he found. Technology advanced leaps and bounds since 2007, and in ways that were unsettling to someone with his knowledge of the future. Not to mention that was just the publicly available tech. Every time he passed someone having a conversation with their cell phone it made him cringe. Sure, those devices were being helpful today. Tomorrow they could be waging war on the very people who created them.
Sighing, John took a drink from the water bottle in his hand and watched a pair of bikers make their way through the park. Life did appear normal here, at least what the average person would call normal, and he tried to take a little comfort in that. It was 2013 and there was no battle-ravaged landscape before his eyes. The time of Judgment Day had come and gone in this world and nothing had happened. Whether that meant Skynet didn't, or wouldn't, exist in this world or that simply the timeline had been changed he didn't know. For all he knew his last time travel event prior to arriving in this bizarre place had changed the timeline. No, take that back, he did know that the timeline had changed. There was just no way of knowing if any of the timelines he was aware of applied to this world.
Maybe he should have been doing like so many other people seemed to be; making the best of this strange place and going on with their lives. Going on with his life meant continuing to go after the people and tools responsible for Skynet. Living a so-called normal life? There was a time he wanted that more than anything. Now... now he wouldn't even know where to begin.
