Veronica was tired, but she still had work to do. She hated these late nights, as much as she was used to them. For an eighteen year old girl she had a lot of responsibility, and the only one of the owners that didn’t seem to lack a moral compass. New people showed up all the time, but no one seemed to care as long as rent was paid. Veronica was still recovering from being shot and being stressed all the time was not helping in the least. And then there was Lilly…Lilly was somehow alive here, and it felt strange to Veronica, like it wasn’t real…like at any moment she could be gone.
And she could be gone, easily. This place had a habit of making people disappear too. She rubbed her temple as she stepped into the elevator, maybe some caffeine would help her a little. She still had a few hours before she could actually sleep. Someone needed to remind her that she was not invincible and that going to school, running a building and trying to be a Private Investigator was a little too much for her to handle.
Her fingers traced the wound on her stomach through her shirt. It was healing well, but still, she couldn’t stop thinking about how scared she’d been that it was the end that night.
