This was Cissa’s favorite time of the week. She had double potions, then dinner, and then… nothing. It was the very beginning of the weekend. While dinner was always a social affair for Cissa, she was not particularly fond of most of the Hogwarts fare so especially on Friday’s, she often nipped out early. It gave the advantage of letting her get changed and settled into her favorite corner of the common room, which was nearly always taken by upperclassmen, her sister included. This was the time that Cissa took to look back on the week before she felt any compulsion to do any of the weekend’s homework. There was nothing but fun to look forward to, without thoughts of time dwindling. It was a moment to savor.
Usually. As Cissa settled into the heavy velvet chaise that was so dark a green it was nearly black and ran her hands under her short suede skirt to smooth it out before crossing her thin ankles, she realized that the usual sense of ease that settled in during this hour was eluding her. With a bit of a pout, she wiggled her feet and inspected her pale pink toenail polish for any hint of imperfection, but that didn’t help take Cissa’s mind off the weight pressing just behind her temple. She reached back and ran her fingers through her hair as if she could get to the spot then let the gold slip through her fingers, twisting a curl to disguise the hint of discomfort. This was getting ridiculous.
The last thing Cissa usually allowed to intrude into this precious time was the banal chatter of her classmates, but she found herself reaching into her bag and pulling out her journal, flicking it open listlessly against the arm of the chaise. This was definitely not going to help. Cissa pulled her quill out and ran the feather tip against her lower lip as she considered a response to the little muggle history lesson on their upcoming masquerade ball. It was an issue she took personally, as the ball was a Lilies’ event and the Venetian theme had been her idea. This stupid twit had masquerade all wrong. At least, she only had the history as written by those filthy muggles… and what a history it was too. They completely ignored the fact that the deities being worshiped at that time were witches and wizards among the hoi paloi… and that was just the beginning in a long line of misinformation. But the quill never made it the paper. Cissa did not want to come off as too brainy, so she would have to settle for being catty… but that did not suit her mood. She also did not want to risk appearing to know too much about muggle history…
There it was again. That slight pressure behind the temple that would not leave her alone. Pretty soon the common room would be filling up, the first few were already coming in full of Friday’s good cheer. It reminded her of why Cissa had found it expedient to leave a bit earlier than was her usual habit this Friday. She had not exactly been avoiding Bella, but she was aware of her sister’s eye on her and more than once she’d heard that familiar soft “Cissy” from behind and felt herself tighten just a bit before she suddenly found herself incredibly busy. Cissa was smart enough not to actually hide from her eldest sister, but she had gotten fairly good at evading her. The trouble was, to do so actually hurt her. They were very close after all and… well Cissa put family above all others.
Yet the key to Cissa’s getting away with things had always been through evasion and half-truths. She knew that her parents would not approve of the movie nights, let alone her desire to maintain her relationship with Sirius - not that she was letting that one out of the bag around Bella. Cissa could claim approval though. She’d wriiten to Mummy, and gotten no written response, but party favors and costume help. It was an obvious trap, but one Cissa was willing to walk into for the fun of the moment. Her parents were far away while they were at school. She respected them, but already had to justify her heavy involvement in the school’s organized activities. Cissa honestly believed that her parents knew that she was fully faithful to everything that the family stood for, she just didn’t always take things as seriously as her two older sisters… there were advantages to being the baby after all. Bella though… she was in close proximity.
Still having written nothing, Cissa gave up and shut the journal. She would deal with the ignorant little twit later, or she wouldn’t. There was something to be said for rising above after all. Maybe that is what she would do if Bella said anything… after all, she was doing nothing wrong. At least, so far as Bella knew. Cissa was going to leave aside friendly relations with James Potter, attempts to make amends with Sirius and a million other little offences for the moment. Right now, she knew the topic of the day was likely to be her insistence on attending the movie nights put on by James and Evans… and her taking Meda along with her. As if Meda had not had a good time…
Cissa knew she wanted to have this conversation with Bella. The pressure behind her temple had been growing. She had even been short with Fifi in class during the week, which was completely out of character. Besides, how clever was it to leave dinner even earlier than usual so that she could then sit in one of her sister’s favorite spots… the one well out of the fray, where it was quiet and conversations went unheard. The choice of spots was typical for Cissa of a Friday, but often as much because she was looking for her sister’s company. She was certainly smart enough to know that she needed to avoid the spot if she wanted to avoid the inevitable confrontation… and it was not as if Bella ever forgot anything. No. There was no point in trying to mend fences with Sirius while hurting her relationship with Bella. Even if she had to risk her sister’s anger, Cissa had to face her. Evasion may be how she got away with most of what she did, but Cissa knew how to face the music when the time came.
