One of the weekend hotspots for both highborn and lowborn witches and wizards aged 17+ had been Ignotus' Cloak--the only wizarding underground nightclub in London. Literally underground, clubgoers access the spot (which had been converted from extra Gringotts' vaults three decades ago) from two entry points designated by class status. Once admitted, visitors would descend into the party space hearing either the thumping bass of the house DJ or seductive live music riffs drawing people to the dance floor. Liquor flowed from the two fully stocked bars on the main floor, and also the nobles-only lounge on the second floor, where merchants could only set foot if escorted by a member of nobility.
Friday night at the Cloak featured live bands. The warm-up act (which didn't really count as an act as they only played a handful of songs, so it was really more of a test-run/audition), slotted from 9-9:20, featured a young duo calling themselves Gilderoy's Glory--two younger male wizards each wearing two muggle neckties around their heads as they shredded their guitars and sing-screamed into their mics. Their impressive guitar playing sort of made up for their overbearing voices, and their songs pulled a mixed review from the earlier crowd. After their four songs, the first official act, WormFlobber, played a 45 minute set. A seasoned wizard musical group, their style held more of a wizard rap/hip-hop vibe, drawing more of a crowd to gather by the stage and sway along to their sharp beats and quick-wit lyrical poetry.
By 10:30, most clubgoers had helped themselves to at least two drinks and had caught up with their friends enough where they could truly focus on the music. The Dirigible Plums took the stage in that prime timeslot for the first time, eager to entertain for their two full sets. Lead singer Fiona Killick, ordinarily found slinging bottles and washing dishes at The Leaky Cauldron, gripped the mic and its metal stand in a power stance with her best mates/not-blood-family ready to rock alongside her. Warm house lights flickered on, spotlight center stage as the Plums opened their set with a powerhouse Grace Potter cover. Fi's voice, combined with the perfect rhythm of her friends' instruments backing her, caught the attention of those ordinarily not caring about the music, and soon enough, something akin to a more rowdy-than-violent mosh pit formed in front of the stage, calmer dancers making their way toward the back of the crowd.
That buzzing energy diffused from the stage out through the dance floor and throughout both levels of the club. The Plums played a mix of wizard rock covers, muggle rock covers, and a few original songs. Much to their delight, the crowd cheered them back out for an extra encore, pushing their set to half past midnight. After, the house DJ cut in with club music for the transitional period before the featured band for the evening took the stage. Floo Fighters carried the musical weight expertly until last call (2:30) and the club closed down officially at 3:00. During that time period, varying degrees of exhausted, drunk, and happy merchants stumbled or dragged their achy feet through an otherwise asleep Diagon Alley. Some of them had to rise for work before sunup, but the majority agreed... it was bloody fucking worth it.
