Faces flushed, hearts racing, the two young men tumbled off their broomsticks outside number twelve, Grimmauld Place, barely caring if their notice-me-not charms were still functioning. “Didn’t I tell you it’d be fantastic?” Regulus laughed giddily, and even Severus had a smile on his face. “Did you see what Lucius did to that old Muggle? I thought I was going to fall off my broomstick!”
“Wouldn’t have been so funny if Rosier hadn’t warned us the Aurors were coming, though,” Severus felt it necessary to say. It didn’t seem to worry Regulus, however – he simply threw back his handsome head of his, black hair falling on his shoulders like the silk of their Lord’s robes, and laughed again.
“That just makes it all the more exciting! They’d never have caught us anyway – they’re all too old, too slow. They’re just a bunch of Muggle-loving spoilsports who’ve never learned how to have fun! After all, it wasn’t like we were doing any harm – we’d have Obliviated the Muggles afterwards if the Aurors hadn’t kindly turned up to do it for us!”
Severus reflected, as Regulus pushed the front door wide open and waved him in with a flourish to the Black family home, that until very recently having fun hadn’t been something he was particularly proficient at either. Regulus had changed all that. So charming, so full of life, so completely unlike that thrice-damned brother of his – Severus could hardly believe that Regulus had chosen him as friend and confidante. And possibly, he almost allowed himself to hope sometimes, they might one day be something more.
“Muggles shouldn’t be out on Halloween night, anyway – and if they are, they deserve what they get. Halloween is our night, the night where wizards rule the world,” Regulus continued. He paused, a look of satisfaction on his face. “Of course, when our Lord achieves his rightful place, every night will be our night. Muggles will know their place, then, and cower in their houses after dark or face the consequences!”
Severus couldn’t help thinking with a deep sadistic pleasure of his father. Yes, he’d like to see the old bastard locked up in his house of an evening, quaking in his heavy, beer-stained boots in fear of Severus and his friends. Poetic justice indeed. “Aren’t your parents home?” he thought to ask, as they walked into the dark and gloomy hallway.
“Lumos,” Regulus said carelessly, and torches in brackets along the wall flared into life. “No, they always go away at this time of year. We’ve got the place to ourselves. Come on into the kitchen, we’ll get some drinks. Kreacher!”
The house-elf appeared with a pop, his wrinkled features distorted into what passed for a smile at the sight of his young master. Severus hoped Regulus hadn’t noticed how much he’d jumped at the elf’s arrival – he still hadn’t got used to them, despite spending more and more time at Malfoy Manor lately. After all, they were so bloody unobtrusive at Hogwarts – you could go for years without even knowing they existed. It was just another reminder of the gap between him and Regulus that he frequently despaired would ever be bridged, for all that Regulus seemed to seek out his company.
“Master Regulus is home! And Master Regulus is bringing his guest! Kreacher is getting everything ready for Master - ”
“Thank you, Kreacher,” Regulus broke in firmly. “Now, it’s a chilly night out there – how about you get us some grog? It’s an old family recipe,” he explained to Severus, as they sat down at the kitchen table, tossing their masks aside.
“Thank you. That would be most kind,” Severus said politely, spoiling his attempt at good manners by blurting out impulsively, “What was Kreacher getting ready for you?”
“Oh, just airing the rooms, that’s all. You will stay tonight, won’t you?”
It doesn’t mean anything. He’s just offering me a bed for the night, Severus told himself firmly. “If you’re sure it will not be too much trouble,” he managed to say.
Regulus grinned. “You’re being awfully stiff and formal tonight, Severus. Come on, drink your grog – it’ll help you relax.”
Severus took a cautious sip from the large mug that had appeared on the table in front of him. The pungent flavours of dark rum and cinnamon filled his mouth, the sweetness of the drink testifying to the addition of sugar – dark muscovado, he rather fancied. And yes – there was a hint of nutmeg there too.
Regulus was watching him avidly. “You know, I bet you could make that yourself now after just one sip. I could see you analysing it. So, does it get the Severus Snape stamp of approval?”
Severus took another swallow. “Indeed it does.”
Regulus raised an eyebrow. The flickering torchlight made him look mischievous, puckish. Severus would not have been surprised to discover twin horns nestling in that luscious, dark hair. “And is it helping you to relax?” Regulus purred.
His face growing a little warm, Severus declined to answer. “I hear Lucius will be marrying your cousin Narcissa,” he said instead. “A pretty girl, isn’t she?”
“She doesn’t interest me,” Regulus said carelessly – and then shockingly, he placed his hand on Severus’ where it rested on the table. “Why don’t we go through to the lounge?”
Heart thumping, Severus allowed himself to be led into a large drawing room – where he stopped in amazement. A roaring fire crackled in the grate, and the room was bright with the light of dozens of intricately carved jack-o-lanterns, floating lazily in the air and casting twisted, ever-shifting shadows upon the walls. Two enormous pumpkins sat either side of the hearth. They appeared to be leering at him, their demonic silhouettes stretched out upon the wolfskin hearthrug. For a moment, Severus could not speak. “Is – is this a joke?” he managed finally.
“A joke? No, not in the least,” Regulus smiled, and a trick of the shadows made it seem as though he really did have horns, for a moment. “I was hoping it might manage to be more of a seduction.”
Severus took a deep breath. Still he felt as if he were Petrified, robbed of motion and almost of thought. He had dreamed of this – and now that it seemed to be happening, he was paralysed with fear of doing the wrong thing, of turning this relationship sour as he had done every other relationship that had ever mattered to him.
“Shh,” Regulus whispered, although Severus hadn’t said a word.
Small, delicate hands crept round Severus’ waist, their touch seeming to burn him through the coarse fabric of his robes. Severus could feel hot breath on the back of his neck – Merlin – could feel Regulus’ arousal pressing gently into his buttocks, its heat setting his entire being aflame. Not a trick, he whispered silently, incredulously to himself. He wants me. It was not until the sound had escaped him that Severus realised he had moaned.
“Mmm,” Regulus hummed in reply, and soft lips began to caress Severus’ neck, followed by a serpentine tongue that licked and teased: at the nape of his neck, at the corner of his jaw, at his earlobe. Supple fingers combed through his hair – stop, he wanted to tell them, you’ll be revolted – but his treacherous tongue refused to frame the words. And now the fingers had stopped in any case, but they did not flee, disgusted – they moved downwards, along his throat, down to his chest, which rose and fell with the force of Severus’ harsh breathing.
“You seem hot, Severus,” Regulus murmured. “May I undress you?”
He could have asked, may I Crucio you? and still Severus would have been unable to refuse him, although it was all he could do to give words to his assent. “Y – yes,” he croaked, and he could feel Regulus’ smile at the back of his neck.
The clothing they had worn for the night’s revels was not Severus’ usual armour – consequently, it was a matter of moments before Regulus’ whispered charm had Severus’ robes falling to the floor. “Yesss,” Regulus hissed, running his hands up and down Severus’ body, as if it were a thing of beauty, a thing of sensual delights, not the over-thin, bony frame Severus knew himself to possess. A hand brushed Severus’ groin and he was unable to stop himself bucking as his aching cock sought desperately to regain the fleeting contact.
“Mmm, patience,” Regulus chided him. “Aren’t you going to undress me?” he asked petulantly. Severus groaned at the thought. Taking a deep breath, he turned to face his friend (his lover?) With trembling hands, unable for the moment to remember the simplest charm, he started to undo Regulus’ robes. Regulus waited patiently, head thrown back slightly baring a long, slender throat that Severus ached to kiss, to bite, to mark as his own. Finally the wretched things slipped free, and Severus gazed at the pale, perfect form revealed to him.
“You’re beautiful,” he told Regulus, feeling the words to be totally inadequate.
“So are you,” was the whispered reply – not honest, perhaps, but entirely Slytherin, Severus reflected. He didn’t mind.
“I’ve never – ” it was too mortifying to go on.
Regulus smiled. “I have. I’ll show you what to do. But first – ”
He dropped to his knees, and in that strange, flickering lamplight, surrounded by grinning faces and drunk on the smell of pumpkin and tallow, Severus felt that he had fallen into one of his own dreams, as Regulus took the head of Severus’ cock in his mouth and began to suck slowly, gently, as if it were a great delicacy that he did not want to finish too soon. You don’t have to do that, Severus wanted to tell him. I’ll do anything you want.
As if he had heard Severus’ thoughts – perhaps he had? – Regulus stopped for a moment and grinned up at him. “Do you want me to make you come?”
Hurriedly Severus collected himself. “No – let me – ” Kneeling down awkwardly, he found himself at a loss as to what to do. “Let me – ” he repeated, grateful to have his asinine words cut off as Regulus leaned in to kiss him deeply. His mouth tasted strange. He tastes of me, Severus realised with an almost physical jolt.
“Come over to the rug,” Regulus coaxed. Winking lanterns bobbed out of their way as they walked over to the hearth, Severus trying to calm the frantic beating of his heart, to stop his palms from sweating. Carelessly, Regulus flung himself down upon the soft grey fur of the hearthrug and lay there, perfectly framed and illuminated by the firelight, his hair falling away from that beautiful face as he propped himself up on his elbows. “Come on,” he urged, and awkwardly, Severus knelt down beside him. “No, sit astride me,” Regulus ordered, and Severus climbed over, feeling ill proportioned and ungainly next to Regulus’ elegant, long-limbed form.
Regulus smiled, and settled down into the pelt of the wolfskin rug beneath him, black hair falling on the grey, pulling Severus down into a kiss. Their erections pressed together, and Severus, fearing that he would lose control, would disgrace himself, pulled back. “All right?” Regulus asked him.
“I – yes.” Trying to calm his breathing, Severus moved backwards, until his face was level with Regulus’ groin. His cock was like the rest of him: long, perfectly shaped, a thing of beauty. Hesitantly, Severus placed his lips over it, marvelling at the strange, salty taste, and moved downwards to take in as much as he could.
The head hit the back of his throat and he gagged helplessly. Tears of mortification stung his eyes as he choked.
“Shh,” Regulus told him once more. “You’re trying too hard.” Severus couldn’t look at him. “You’re fantastic,” Regulus breathed, and Severus almost wished he would mock him openly, rather than patronise him with false kindness. Almost. Determinedly, he bent his head once more, this time careful not to take in too much. “Merlin, yes!” Regulus panted. Perhaps he was not so wholly dreadful at this. “Use your hand as well – yes!”
Regulus’ hand was in his hair now, pulling so hard it hurt. His jaws were starting to ache, his lips bruised from using them to shield his teeth. His whole body felt cramped from the awkward position, and he never wanted it to end. Abruptly Regulus pushed him up, away from his cock, and as he reeled, knowing he had failed, had humiliated himself, he felt the shock of hot liquid hitting his face and stared at Regulus in surprise.
“Merlin, Severus! If you could see yourself…” Regulus had come. Had come on his face. Should he be angry, affronted? Severus stayed there on his knees like a fool, until Regulus pulled him down and kissed his semen-streaked lips, tongue darting out to lick them clean and then returning that bizarre, bleach-like flavour to Severus. It felt so extraordinarily intimate that Severus forgot his outrage, forgot everything except that he had done this, he had brought Regulus to orgasm – he, Snivellus, ugly Snape with his second-hand robes, mocked by all and liked by none.
“Was that…” he could not finish.
Regulus smiled lazily. “I told you, you were fantastic. But let’s get you clean.” Accioing his discarded undershirt, he used the soft, silky garment to gently, caressingly wipe his essence from Severus’ face and hair. “Mmm, that’s better. Now, do you want me to blow you,” he murmured casually, “or would you rather fuck me?”
The hitch in Severus’ breathing must have told Regulus the answer, as he rolled over with feline grace and rose up on all fours, smiling back at Severus. “You’ll need to prepare me first. Accio lubricant!”
Severus willed his hands to stop shaking as he followed Regulus’ instructions, scarcely able to believe that this beautiful boy would permit him to do this, would allow him to touch him, invade him. “That’s it,” Regulus sighed. “I won’t need much. I’ve wanted this for a long time. Wanted you, Severus. Inside me.”
It was harder than he had expected, to breach the tight ring of muscle with his cock, so much larger than his fingers. Regulus pressed back against him, as if eager to swallow him whole. Suddenly something gave, and Severus felt the head of his cock pop inside. Into Regulus, who hissed “Yesss!” and arched his back. Encouraged, overwhelmed by the feeling of heat, of constriction around his cock, Severus pushed forward, stopping suddenly when Regulus cried out.
“Have I – ” Horrified that he must have hurt his friend, Severus began to pull out.
“Merlin, don’t stop!” Regulus, face flushed, gave him a wild grin over his shoulder in eerie echo of the pumpkin lanterns that flanked them, leering their encouragement. “I can take it, don’t worry. Don’t hold back. Fuck me hard.”
It was as if he had cast Imperius on Severus, who suddenly felt he could not have stopped if the Dark Lord himself had ordered him to. Grabbing hold of Regulus’ hips, he pounded into him furiously, adding his own hoarse grunts to his lover’s cries of yes and harder and oh fuck, just there! He felt his orgasm rise up upon him like the swift flight of a Dementor, and scarce knew if it were his semen or his soul that pulsed into Regulus with an intensity that was almost more pain than pleasure. His body shuddering, he tried to hold himself up with shaking arms so as not to crush Regulus with his weight as his lungs laboured and his head spun.
In the silence, broken only by the whisper of their breath, the sound of the front door opening was shockingly loud. As Severus froze, Regulus twisted underneath him and grinned wickedly. “I think we’d better get dressed, Severus, don’t you?” Summoning his clothes, he donned them efficiently as Severus struggled to collect his wits and do likewise. A wave of Regulus’ wand restored the room to its normal state: the pumpkin demons returned to hell, the air freshened as if it had never been saturated with the heady reek of candle wax and sex.
“I thought your parents were away!” Severus hissed furiously, as he straightened his robes and tried to restore some semblance of order to his hair.
Regulus was still grinning. “Oh, didn’t I mention? They always go away for October, but they come back on Halloween night.” Boldly, he flung open the living room door and strode into the hall to meet his parents.
“Mother! Father! How was your holiday?”
Severus scuttled uneasily in his wake, his stomach roiling at the thought that they could so easily have been discovered. Regulus likes to play with fire, he realised – not sure if it was more unsettling or arousing.
Regulus greeted his parents warmly. His mother, Severus saw, was a haughty woman in smartly tailored robes who still, despite her years, showed clear signs of the beauty she had bequeathed to her son, whilst his father had a greyish tinge to his complexion that spoke of chronic illness.
“Mother, Father, this is my friend, Severus Snape.”
“Snape, eh? Never heard the name.” Walburga Black glared at him with distrust contorting her elegant, patrician features.
“My mother was a Prince,” Severus told her, his head determinedly held high. At least there was part of his lineage he need not be ashamed of.
“Hmph! Half-blood, are you?”
“Oh, Mother!” Regulus smiled that charming smile of his, and Severus envied him – not only for the smile itself, but for the way his mother’s face softened when she saw it. “You don’t need to worry about Severus. He’s as faithful to our Lord as I am.”
