That… was rather the opposite of what Deirdre had expected to hear. She had perhaps expected some kind of reprimand. She had expected a new assignment maybe… but the Second of the Territory was asking her – Deirdre Prewett to head her guard? “Fuck me.” She murmured. Irene wasn’t just asking her to serve on the guard, but to actually head it? “You must not have talked to my Super.” She added incredulously.
Then her brain caught up with her mouth. That was probably not the best way to respond to a job offer – and an offer of a marked promotion – especially not to the Second of the territory. One who was clearly a bit on the formal side. And Deirdre was neglecting the Vampire’s question as well as her Manners... “I saw the announcement – Congratulations.” When she’d read the announcement, she had been impressed that the vampire she’d worked with had gotten named Second – it was the first time she’d ever met anyone who could be considered part of the higher ups. “I’m glad you were impressed enough with me on that retrieval.” And they had worked well together – tag-teaming to take down the first Revenant. “I’m just glad every time I don’t die, and don’t watch someone else die either.” Deirdre added honestly with a half shrug.
It wasn’t the life she’d envisioned… Of course she’d learned years before the Collapse that there was no point in trying to picture where life was going to take you. This could be the first pleasant surprise life has offered her since she met Ben. “I’d be a fool not to be interested."
There was no point in getting her hopes up about the offer once Irene began asking around about her. "But, well, what I said before, about my Super… I mean, he and I have had some… conflicts.” The vampire had said she valued honesty and someone to speak her mind… “I doubt he would recommend me without serious reservations…” There was no sense in denying what the Vampire would hear as soon as she began checking references.
