11 photos of actress Anna May Wong
There was an interesting short article about actress Anna May Wong (1905-61) in the Guardian recently (link via daegaer on eljay). She was reputedly one of the most photographed women of her time, which is understandable because she was beautiful. Cue picspam, mostly from the 1920s and 1930s.
Many art photographers enjoyed working with Anna May Wong because she knew how to present herself so the camera would record her as strong shapes made of light and shade.
Fabrics (for my fellow Ladies Sewing Circle and Terrorist Society members, including the men).
Anna May Wong (born Liu Tsong Wong) and her sister, who I thought was Lulu Wong (aka Liu Ying Wong), however, erik_hai has pointed out that it's probably Anna May Wong's younger sister Mary in the photo not her older sister Lulu. Mary was, I believe, an understudy on at least one of her older sister's films. _____
I originally included the next photo for a friend's amusement. Which of these women is not like the others? Clue: it's not the one in the middle. _____
There's more detail on her career at us_asians and a picture community at annamay_daily on eljay. I especially recommend this post for history fans. It includes the special application Anna May Wong had to make before she was allowed to re-enter the U.S. after travelling abroad, in 1936, despite the fact she was a third generation U.S. citizen.
