OCTOBERISH
Raelene Preece ✦ Malcolm Preece
Sibling Fun & Breakfast Low Complete |
Even though it didn’t quite hold all of the excitement that she was used to, Raelene had been satisfied so far with the beachy island in the sun. Her job as a surfing instructor allowed her to stay busy instead of growing too restless, and having her brother around wasn’t so terrible either. She’d missed him and the rest of her siblings, so it was nice to be able to have time to catch up. For as crazy of a schedule she could keep sometimes, Raelene actually managed to get up early a few days a week to go out surfing before the beaches became too crowded. This was one of those mornings. Once she’d gotten enough waves to satisfy her, she headed back to the townhouse and soon realized that she’d made it back in time even before Malcolm had come downstairs. As she rummaged through the fridge for something to eat for breakfast, she decided to make something for the both of them. To fit with her theme, Rae flipped on the radio to a Latin station and began half walking and half dancing across the kitchen to find all of her ingredients for her taquizas. They were basically breakfast omelette tacos, and she made sure to include all of her favorite ingredients. She was bopping around to the music at the stove and was nearly finished when she saw Malcolm come into the kitchen with a look like he was wondering what in the world she was doing. She simply grinned at him. “Hope you’re hungry!” Sleeping in was something he didn't do too often, but when he did, he did it well. This morning was one of those mornings, that could be because he had gone to bed around sometime in the early morning, making sleeping in much the sweeter. Stretching he heard sounds downstairs and figured his sister had gone crazy again which wasn't something he could really say much about because he wasn't known as Saney pants sane himself. Yawning he made his way towards the kitchen and stopped. "Did you lose a bet?" He asked before breaking into a smile. "What's on the menu Chef Sis?" “Hah, aren’t you a funny bloke,” she said. The music kept on playing and she kept on shuffling around to it as it kept on. “Breakfast taquizas.” Raelene smiled when she turned around. The eggs in the pan were cooked and meshed all together with a couple different peppers, onions, a bit of cheese, and a few other bits and pieces that could be added as either of them wanted. She was the type who liked to load up hers rather than leave them plain. “Time to start earning my keep, right? Besides, Mum would be awfully cross with me if I didn’t make sure you stayed well fed and fattened-up.” “Taquizas?” Malcolm wasn’t the most educated on different foods. He didn’t have the traveling under his belt that his sister did, and the word sounded like… “So, like a trapeze of breakfasts? Does this mean I have to do tricks or something?" Tilting his head his mind was clearly going in too many directions at once. Shaking his head he nodded, "well, she'd be really upset if you ate stuff and didn't share, sharing is caring, and sharing makes the world go around and around." Malcolm said opening the fridge. "Juice?" “Yes. Loads of tricks,” she said in all seriousness. “That’s the tradition. Before eating one, you have to do a trick of some sort.” She was obviously bullshitting him, but sometimes it was easy to do. She kept a straight face, but she avoided eye contact with him as she continued to keep everything in order on the stove. Her eyes always gave herself away. “Orange, please,” she said about the juice. Placing the food on plates, she leaned against the counter once he’d poured the juice. “Alright. Go on then. Let’s see what you’ve got. Then I’ll do all the sharing and making the world go round.” "What kind of trick? A tap dance, a flip, clapping?" Malcolm got a feeling she might be full of shit given she wouldn't look at him, but he was going to play along anyways because really, he thought the idea of a need to do something before breakfast hysterical. Malcolm kept both glasses of juice out of reach. "I think I need more information on this trick breakfast before I share the caring orange juice." He countered. “A tap dance with a little twirl. That’s it. That’s the one I want to see.” Raelene drummed her fingers against the side of her face and watched him with a mischievous smile. He had to know she was playing with him and yet he still went along with it. That’s what she liked about her brother. He went along with her crazy ideas every now and again just to see the fun of it. Plating the taquizas in front of him, she started to assemble one of her own as she waited for him to get to tapping. “You can even use the music as inspiration,” she said and reached out to turn the dial up a smidge as another Latin song came on over the radio. "Oh no, these are salsa morning tacos, and you were going to let me tap dance?!" Malcolm placed a hand over his heart startled and shocked. "How could you!" He scolded playfully. "Nope, now you are the one that needs to do the trick for the taco special morning thing," he said crossing his arms working very hard to keep a straight face as the edges of his lips tugged up in the starts of a smile. “Salsa morning tacos,” she said flippantly and made a ‘pfft’ sort of sound and shook her head. “They are so much more than that, brother. So much more.” Except when it came right down to it… not really. Calling them by their proper name sounded so much more exciting though, and she was always looking for some new adventure. “Alright, alright fine. No one does tap dancing or tricks for breakfast this time. I’ll share my taquizas,” With a little enunciating on taquizas. “If you share your orange juice.” Raelene wiggled her eyebrows a bit at her brother and waved the plate in front of him teasingly. She started to move over towards the little breakfast table. “So, what do you do for excitement around here?” Sighing dramatically he grabbed the two glasses and followed her to the table and placed both down, one where she could actually reach it and do something with it, like drink it, ideally. “Well, mostly it’s bars, dancing, surfing, water sports, rinse and repeat,” Malcolm admitted. “Lots of surfing.” He added. “It’s sort of a sleepy sort of town, moves slow, friendly but slow.” Raelene rolled her eyes as his dramatics and immediately took a long sip of the juice when he sat down the glass. She passed him his plate and started to dig into her own. It wasn’t as good as some of the versions she’d had in other parts of the world, but it was pretty damn tasty if she did say so herself. “I’ve done a bit of surfing since I’ve been here, but I’ll have to check out some of the other things soon. Maybe even find a job to keep myself busy and not get into your hair too much.” She grinned at him from behind the glass of juice. “Maybe find a someone or two to do a couple of those with.” "Not bad sis," he said after a couple of bites. "Ah, yes, a job, that's something we do need here to keep our beach lifestyle going, it's odd needing to work an hourly wage." Malcolm was a pro-Quidditch player, hourly work was weird, and paid a hell of a lot less than his previous career. "What are you thinking?" She shrugged. On one hand, there were a lot of options, but on the other hand, options were also limited. “I’m not sure. I’ve taught surfing before, but I’m not sure if I have the patience to try it again. Maybe just at a surf shop somewhere or a bartender. I’ve done that a couple of times and it wasn’t too bad.” Taking a few bites of her food, Raelene washed it down with some orange juice. “What about you? Any job prospects for a world-famous Quidditch player like you? I don’t think there’s a place to offer flying lessons around here.” "You should bartender, I've always wanted a sister bartender, I could come in and yell 'HEY SIS GIVE ME ONE OF THOSE UMBRELLA DRINKS!' and everyone would look at me awkwardly, and I'd get an umbrella thrown at me, it'd be a whole thing." Shrugging he sighed, "I've turned into a kayak instructor," he didn't mind it. "It's not exactly as exciting as avoiding bludgers and scoring goals, but it has its moments. I did see a shark the other day." As her brother explained his reasonings for her to become a bartender, Raelene simply watched him. His expressions and over excitement at times often amused her, and this time was no different. “Now if that isn’t a good enough reason to take the job then I don’t know what is.” She’d been to a few of the bars around town, so she had a little idea where she might be able to find something. She took a couple bites of her meal. “Instead of dodging bludgers, you’re dodging sharks. Some might argue that’s a step down on the danger scale.” She’d definitely seen some gruesome injuries after matches. “And, hey, maybe you can give me a few pointers, huh?” Grinning he nodded. "Well, it looks like you have a new job to go find and get!" "Complete downgrade on the danger scale, just don't tell the locals that, some will tell you sharks are friendly and good, some will scream and run away," he said nodding. "On my spectacular kayaking skill, I suppose I could take you kayaking one of these days." “Look at us,” she said with a grin and raised her glass just a bit before taking a quick sip of juice. “Being productive members of muggle society.” It wasn’t the first time she’d had this sort of job; it was really more along the lines of what she was used to anyway. “Kayaks for you, cute little umbrella drinks for me.” Raelene smiled again at her brother and started to finish up her breakfast. The very breakfast that she’d slaved over and was very tasty thank you very much. Maybe she’d make this a regular morning tradition. Nah, probably not. |
