MID-OCTOBER
Raelene Preece ✦ Jim Kirk
Chatting/Making Plans Low Complete |
So far, Raelene was having a brilliant time in this little beach town. There was maybe still a small irritation for being taken away against her will, but her brother was here, others from home were here. It wasn’t the excitement of buffalo migrations or cheating death by swimming up against the edge of the highest waterfall in the world, but she’d managed to make the most of it. She’d even been set up with a job as a surfing instructor, and that gave her a great chance to keep up with her need to stay active. The more she stayed still, the harder it was for her to be in one place for a long period of time. Especially when she’d been brought to a place by a strange kind of portkey that wasn’t really a portkey. She’d finished up her shift, but she decided to get in a few waves of her own late in the afternoon. The best waves were always during the early morning hours when fewer people were around to get in the way, but she’d managed to find a part of the beach that wasn’t overflowing with tourists and beach goers. The waves weren’t quite as active as she’d like, so after a little while she ended up coming back to shore and sat on the beach watching as the sun moved closer and closer to the edge of the horizon. It was a view she’d never get tired of seeing. As she sat leaning back with her hands against the sand, she heard someone start to approach. Looking over, saw a familiar face and half smiled to herself. Now, that wasn’t a bad view she’d get tired of seeing either. “Well, hello. Taking an afternoon beach walk?” Jim grinned as he recognized the woman from the network. She was from the same world as Alicia, if he remembered right. After a little more than a month in National City together and now this, he was starting to consider Alicia to be one of his best friends. She was also the only real familiarity her had here in Plum Springs where none of his crew had managed to show up so far. “Something like that,” he answered. Even with a new job, he found himself feeling a little restless here. He didn’t always know what do with himself or what his purpose was really supposed to be here. A walk on the beach probably wouldn’t hold all the answers, but it did help to have a nice view to pass the time with. “I’ve always said that salt air helps to clear the head,” she said and stood up so that he wasn’t having to stare down at her. “I was about to head back myself, if you’d like some company.” He didn’t seem to object, so Rae picked up her board and kept on walking with him. “Have you been keeping yourself out of trouble, Space Man? Or at least a reasonable amount of trouble. The days get right boring if you don’t find a spot of trouble every now and then. The fun’s getting yourself out of it.” “Unfortunately, yes,” he said, laughing at her addendum. “See, that’s usually my philosophy,” he said with a grin. “I’m not sure it’s one my senior staff really agrees with.” He could just imagine the comments Bones and Spock would make if they could hear him say that. They didn’t seem to enjoy the art of getting him out of trouble nearly as much as Jim did. “I usually have a knack for finding trouble,” he admitted, looking over at her with a smile, “but there doesn’t seem to be much to find here.” He didn’t want to say it was boring, but, well, it kind of was. Raelene wrinkled her nose a bit. “My brothers and sisters usually feel that way about most of the fun I try to have. My brother that’s here, though - Malcolm - he humours me more than some of my older siblings.” He was a good sport when it came to her antics, and she could usually weasel him to join in if she asked in just the right way. “Oh, come on now. That just means you’re not trying hard enough,” she teased and playfully nudged him on the arm. “We should try change that.” Jim gave her a full grin at that. Truth be told, he had been a little bored here. He had company in the form of some very cool people, he was looking at getting a job and there were things to do and a new environment to explore, but it lacked the excitement and adventure of his normal life. It lacked real purpose. Here Rae was, offering him a distraction from that uncertainty and he’d be an idiot not to take her up on it. “What did you have in mind?” he asked her. She shrugged. “Well, according to my brother, there isn’t a lot to do around here, but there are the usual things. Bars, dancing, surfing, water sports.” She motioned to her board at the mention of surfing. “I think there’s a karaoke bar or a restaurant with live music somewhere.” She wasn’t sure if any of that sounded like fun to him or not, a lot of things probably sounded boring after flying around in space - she certainly had a lot more crazy adventures herself than what she could get into in Plum Springs - but she’d been in places more dull than this before too. “There’s the usual water fun things. Boat rentals, sea doos. Anything in there strike your fancy?” Jim considered their options for a moment. “Who says we have to limit ourselves to just one thing?” He asked, flashing her a grin. She’d mentioned quite a few things he could be into and he didn’t see the need to settle. “Let’s start with the Sea Doos and go from there.” Dancing was better as a nighttime activity, anyway. As long as the sun was up and the weather was gorgeous like this, he wanted to be out here enjoying it. “I like you more already,” she said with a grin when he asked why they should settle at only one. She motioned down to herself and the wet suit she was wearing. “I’m already dressed for the part and everything.” Turning back, she tried to see if she could tell where they could find one a couple of the Doos. It had been a while since she’d ridden one, so she was really hoping all of them weren’t already rented out. “I think there was actual a rental place at one of the public access points not far from here. We can check that out to see if they have any available?” Jim just grinned right back at her. “Guess I have some catching up to do,” he said, gesturing at his shorts and t-shirt. He looked around when she did, nodding at she pointed out one of the rental places on the beach. “That looks like a good place to start,” he agreed. He had a wetsuit back at his villa, so they might have to make a quick stop there, but it would be smart to make sure they could find a rental first. With a nod, Raelene led the way up to the shop. She left her board outside the building and went inside to check with one of the clerks. Thankfully, they were in luck and there were a couple of rides available. She secured them their doos and met Jim back outside. “We’re good to go. Want to meet back here in about forty-five minutes?” She gestured to his clothes and shrugged. “I mean, unless you want ride around in those. Might even deter the sharks, huh?” Jim laughed and shook his head. “I actually like these clothes and I’m not sure they’d love the saltwater,” he half-joked. Flashing her a grin, he added, “45 minutes, right here.” That would be plenty of time to change into his own wet suit and get back here. |
