At least the pub was free of monkeys now. Occasionally, one would pop up at the window, but Fawkes had developed a habit of fluffing up his crimson and gold feathers and lunging towards the pane, which usually made them scuttle off. A part of Albus was on edge, waiting for the moment when his winged companion didn’t pull back in time and crashed straight into the glass, but thankfully it had been avoided for now. Instead the evening shift had passed quite uneventfully, with the crowd swelling as usual at around 9 o’clock and then starting to thin out as people sloped off bed.
He missed his magic. It was still there, but in comparison to its usual potency, the small charms and spells he was currently capable of were rather pathetic. He shouldn’t complain, Albus thought as he pulled another pint. So many people had lost their abilities completely. Nonetheless, losing something which was such a huge part of him – something which had made him special for as long as he could remember – it hurt. But as Alphard had said, all they could do was hope this was temporary. Even so, it made Albus quiet and contemplative, content to keep his head down and serve drinks without making too much conversation.
Speaking of… he took a step back towards the end of the bar, where the redheaded woman was sat. Albus spent a moment searching his memory for her name before finally landing upon it.
“Can I get you anything else, Mrs Potter?”
