Katie watched Marcus leave, heart heavy. The distance between them seemed almost insurmountable. If she was honest, she was surprised he'd come at all. She didn't know why he had. It didn't seem as though he'd really wanted to be here and she couldn't blame him. Not a bit. She'd been awful and she wasn't sure any amount of apologizing would let him forgive her. She was watching her relationship crack and fall apart before her eyes and fixing it seemed impossible.
Tugging at the bracelet on her wrist, she'd opened up the wounds in the hours since Fred had left. He wasn't there to throw something at her when she started tugging and the clean bandage she'd placed on it was speckled with blood. It was taking all her willpower not to continue tugging but the burning pain was enough to remind her she was awake and alive and not stuck in her head. It was like pinching yourself to see if you were dreaming only the pain was a more constant reminder.
She stared at the uneaten tray of food, her lunch, sitting there. She hadn't touched it and dinner would be coming soon. Getting up from her cot, Katie dumped the food she didn't eat in the small bin before cleaning her dishes. She might want dinner. Maybe. She'd had half her breakfast this morning and promptly thrown it right up. It was almost as though she could feel the stress crawling its way over her body. George had brought her food that she'd dumped in the bin after he'd left and Oliver had done the same. She glanced down, tugging on her bottoms. They were riding a little lower on her hips then normal.
The door opened and a gust of wind hit her like ice. Taking a deep breath, she lived for those moments. She could smell the outside. Someone had a fire going and the air was crisp and cool. A small smile appeared when Alicia walked in and she couldn't help the relief that filled her when she saw her friend. Ali was her fourth visitor of the day and probably the last since there wasn't much time left.
"Hey," she said, forcing her tone to something close to normal as she tugged the sleeves over the bandage on her wrist. "How's life on the other side? Have Fred and George blown anything up since his momentous release?"
