"I don't know why you decided to be my friend," Steve said honestly, "Because apparently, sometimes you want to punch me, we argue a lot, and you're still holding a lie that I apologized for against me. I can't go back and change what I did. I can't promise I won't do it again. I rarely lie but you had to know I was capable of it. I lied to the US Army more than once."
Was that the problem? Did Tony think he was always honest? Yes, he tried to be but no one could always be honest. Steve got up and paced, annoyance making him restless. He didn't understand what was at the root of Tony's problem. Were they never supposed to lie to each other?
That's a load of bull because Tony lied to him a few times during the Accords, most importantly about Wanda and locking her up. Steve ran a hand over his mouth and then through his hair. Things were so much easier with Bucky, even navigating his choppy memories and mood swings.
"Tony." He braced his hands on the back of his chair and faced Tony. "The reason I'm not back in the fight like everyone thinks I should be is because I'm trying to make it so how things ended between us never happens again. Yes, you started the fight and I was just trying to protect Bucky but the way it ended is on me. I'm working to get my head on straight. I don't know what more you want."
