There was only one place to find Ioan these days outside of classes, at least when he wasn't with Romilda, and that was by the lake. With the quarantine in place, there was nowhere else to go on a beautiful autumn weekend. The weather was unseasonably warm for Scotland and the sun was shining. A wind had picked up earlier in the day, drowning his voice before it could carry too far and draw a crowd from the students milling about on the opposite shore. Three miles. That was all they had in any direction. On this side, where he sat, there was a comfortable log that was covered in moss and curved just slightly so that it was a perfect place to sit.
His fingers moved over the guitar strings with familiarity and with passion, his chin tilted up just slightly as he sang.
"When the ground beneath you starts shakin' (shakin')
And you forget the place we came from (came from)
When you're lost and lookin' for your way home
Your way home to me
I'll come out and find you
When the world around you starts movin' (movin')
And you should wonder if I still love you (love you)
If you feel the darkness comin', risin' inside
I'll make a light to guide you back home
And after all the sky is fallin' down
And after all the water's washed away
My love's the only promise that remains
When your doubts have got you thinkin' (thinkin')
Nothing's ever really sacred (sacred)
And you're afraid you might believe it...
Believe in me
And I'll give you a reason
Cuz the world around us keeps on movin' (movin')
And there's no doubt that I still love you (love you)
So when you feel the darkness comin', risin' inside
I'll make a light to guide you back home
And after all the sky is fallin' down
And after all the water's washed away
My love's the only promise that remains
My love's the only promise that remains
My love's the only promise that remains."
Ioan held the last note as the music and words faded over the water. Time was rolling on so fast lately - the holidays were nearly upon him, and word was that they would be trapped at the school over Christmas. He hadn't been with his family for a major holiday in almost two years. Last Christmas, he'd been in Azkaban. Though the air around him was warm, he shivered at the memory and found it hard to think of being stuck at Hogwarts, missing yet another special time with his mother and father. His only consolation was that he would be surrounded by friends - or at least what friends remained in the regular population. Fear, only so recently a constant companion, was beginning to creep back into his heart. What if the Virus proved to be fatal? What if, God forbid, Romilda or Anthony got it and were taken away from him? He hadn't considered all these things over the summer, when news of the Virus in other countries was just a sad story.
He played several notes in minor and wondered what he would do.
