"Good," he responded. "I would be absolutely heartbroken if you didn't."
As she mentioned the balls, it took a good deal of self control not to roll his eyes. He didn't really share the same enthusiasm for either of the balls as his peers. He had been to far too many balls in his time, so he supposed the idea had mainly lost its appeal. He hadn't exactly tried to hide his displeasure with the idea when the alumni ball had first been announced, and truth be told, it still wasn't something he was really looking forward to though he imagined going with her would make it a little better. Frankly, he had forgotten all about it until recently.
As for the halloween ball, he was only marginally more excited. He had never made a big deal over Halloween; he found it a mildly amusing holiday, but he rarely made a point to celebrate. But he imagined that it could be fun to break that tradition just this once. After all, what did he have to lose? Maybe he would even have fun. Admittedly, he still didn't really have halloween plans yet, but he had time to figure things out.
"Fantastic planning on the school's part. Really. But I guess I must acknowledge their wise decision to have the game after. Which was probably just a coincidence, but I'll give the administration some credit this time." He shrugged. "But I'm largely indifferent to both of them. I've been to more than enough balls, thanks. I'm sure you know the feeling."
