It was hard to keep track of days now. At first, Algernon had been very carefully keeping track. He paid attention to when the meals came and the changing of guard shifts and think "Now it's day," "Now it's night." But that proved futile after awhile as shifts changed and the spellwork that kept him here in his cell became more and more automatic. Algernon now rarely saw another wizard more than once a day.
He supposed he was lucky, really. The main problem in Azkaban these days was mind-twisting boredom. Dementors would have been... worse. Then again, he was in Azkaban and everyone he cared about was dead, imprisoned, or gone, so it was hard to feel lucky about anything.
Maybe worst of all- he was starting to feel something that might almost be regret.
He looked up at the sound of footfalls. Twice in the last... not long. Wasn't he special?
